🏙️ Project Highlight: Primrose Hill, London, NW1 🏙️

Black and Milk was entrusted with transforming a Victorian semi-detached house in the charming neighbourhood of Primrose Hill.

A property developer fully refurbished this 3,200 sqft home, but the interior originally lacked warmth and personality.

Our mission was to create a cosy, inviting design scheme tailored to the needs of a modern family with two young children. Our clients, busy working professionals, needed the project completed on a tight timeline before Christmas.

Their specific requirements included integrating cherished furniture pieces, such as a traditional Chinese rug, into the design.

🛋️ Design Challenges and Solutions 🛋️

The existing plain interior provided a blank canvas for our creative team. We embraced the challenge of incorporating the client's favourite vintage pieces, particularly the elaborate Chinese rug in the living room.

This rug became the focal point, inspiring our selection of fabrics and vintage items, and setting the tone for the entire room.

Transitional Living Room: We created a dual-area living space, using a bench as a soft divider that facilitates conversation across the room. This multifunctional piece anchors the room, providing both structure and versatility.

Vintage and Contemporary Fusion: The design scheme blends a contemporary base with mid-century curves and warm finishes, juxtaposed with vintage collections to reflect the client's personality and style.

Elegant Master Bedroom: The master bedroom features an elegant, traditional aesthetic with American influences and British accents. The neutral tones and luxurious fabrics create a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, accommodating the client’s king-size bed, bedside tables, and armchair.

Glamorous Powder Rooms: The guest powder rooms were refurbished to add a punch of glamour and colour, warming up the space and enhancing the existing concrete floor.

Congratulations on getting such a beautiful first apartment. I'd definitely start with a sofa and 2 chairs, and NOT a loveseat! A lot of us houzzers are anti-loveseat. Two chairs offer so much more flexibility than a loveseat. I'd place the sofa on the wall opposite the fireplace. The two chairs would go in the window with a small table between them. You said you wanted a "big old sofa". I hope that was just a figure of speech as what I think you'd be far better off with is a sofa that is of a nice size, but not too big. I'd look for one with skinny arms so that you have more seating space which is what a sofa is for, after all! A sofa that is 84" long will fit in most homes nicely. Watch the depth of the sofa too as lots of them have gotten far too deep. I'd go 39" deep max. Remember that this is your first apartment, but not your last so stick with pieces that aren't too big. Pay attention to the size of the chairs also. I'd stay under 35" wide, and again with narrow arms. My recommendation would be solid fabrics for both the sofa and the chairs. You can have fun with pattern when you get around to a rug and pillows. You'll also need a coffee table, plus a table to go between the two chairs. I adore the faceted mirror table from West Elm below and would make it a must have. The coffee table below with the marble top is lovely as long as you don't spill red wine on it! Hi. If you create a series of shelves, perhaps decreasing in depth as they climb the wall, you could create a useful office space that won't detract from your living area. If you don't like the look of open shelves, you could alway add a door, flush with the balcony door. If the door had no obvious handle it would look as though the wall ends flush with the glass doors to the balcony.

I would suggest you start by looking at your lease. Old leases tend to say no laminate or wooden floor, or that you can only have carpets except in kitchen / bathroom. Modern leases often suggest a floor covering that doesn't exceed a specific decibel transmission rate. This opens up other coverings such as wood or laminate as you can use them in conjunction with an acoustic underlay, which will keep the noise levels down to a specified minimum,

You should also look at some space saving furniture, There are so many brilliant ideas out there - ottomans that contain extra seating, wall mounted stools which would work with the drop leaf table idea previously mentioned (otherwise you have to find space for them when the table is not there). Also coffee tables that transform (lift up) into dining tables so you could actually do away with the one in the kitchen and perhaps have a slimline coffee bar there instead. I guess it depends again on how often you will use the formal dining table
