What about an internal window through to the sitting room?

Thanks Jessica! That’s exactly what I was thinking and was wondering if that would work (sorry musn’t have explained my thoughts well in my post!)

My parents did a similar thing in their lounge through to the study when they blocked up an existing arch, it does let light flow and feel more open’

I think you could do a nice half moon shape or half pentagon or something I could be done really nicely and add some light

You could remove the wall between the sitting room and dining kitchen and replace it with crittall doors and glass panels. It depends what is the purpose of the front sitting room? Your house looks as though it has had many extensions and changes. Was an architect involved in them? You could have a high level clerestory window but I'm not sure it will add enough light.

As currently your only access to the kitchen and family room is through the dining room would it help to move the WC to the garage end of the family room and create an entrance to the family room there thus opening up the flow to a dining area at the end of the family room overlooking the garden from the kitchen, i am assuming this end of the room gets light from mid afternoon onwards. Then maybe you might feel differently about opening the sitting room fully to the dining area and possibly putting a crittal window/door divide at the kitchen end. It seems a shame to lose the morning/early afternoon light, particularly if you only use the sitting room at night.

Would a lantern roof above the infill give more light too?

I think an internal window would be a great idea, letting in light but still keeping the living room separate. I also think adding a glass door would do a similar job. I love the second picture which incorporates both!

Meant sitting room/ dining room. Would work for you perfectly.

We did this in an old house but didn't bother with a window. We removed half of the wall down to slightly above sofa height so we could still have a sofa against the wall on the other side. It was a lovely feature, it still felt like two rooms.

That always look absolutely fabulous,snd I wonder why more people don’t do the same..our first 2 were recycled from a salvage yard,very easy on the budget ,the 3rd was a steel window.
I think it makes things look much more bespoke
U can try out the look by using masking tape on the wall
