Help with ugly garage

We have a garage which we can’t afford to replace at the moment. We need to retain it for dry safe storage. We will add a new roof and paint the door. Any low cost ideas for disguising the spa stone concrete panels? Trellis and climbers is my only idea at the moment as timber cladding seems pricey. Not sure if the outside could be painted? Thanks.

I love the idea of creepers. Is there a small piece that you could paint using something l like Dulux weathershield or sandstone paint? Try it and see. If they don't do samples see if you can find a small amount of leftover paint from friends, family or a whatsapp group. There are some lovely colours to choose from. I do prefer the green option though. Check what direction it faces and soil type you have for a creeper choice.

You could paint it but if you’re going to use trellis and climbers you probably won’t need to. A Climbing Hydrangea is a good choice as it self clings so you won’t need trellis. Has lovely white flowers in the summer. A good evergreen climber is Star Jasmine which has a wonderful scent . It is a little tender and I lost mine last winter, but someone near me has a huge one climbing up and over a wall, so go figure. For colour you can add Clematis and Roses. However plants can be pricey so worth checking which is cheaper, cladding or plants. Plants every time for me! This is climbing hydrangea.

Can you not just bolt fence posts in to your concrete / decking and then put up a fancy fence such as a shutter fence. You have no need to attach anything to the neighbour's garage, you've got a solid base to work from. You can grow or place anything you like up against it then as it's yours not theirs. Alternatively ( afixed in the same manner ) a 'green wall', you buy them in panelsAs you see, they are fairly free standing. We have just had to do the same. Our neighbours are literally a law unto themselves and quite frankly not the full ticket. ( seriously, they're not right in the head ) They come from a town environment and have never lived in the country. They complain about the horse muck in the lane, saying it spoils their shoes ( well don't go for a walk in the countryside in your best leather brogues, maybe buy a pair of wellies?? ) Also, they don't like the birds sitting on their fence on the way to our feeders as the bird poop gets on their patio! So, they put up pigeon spikes on their fence, which is only 1.7m high, almost eye level for us ( we're all tall ). They honestly could not see that sticking spikes in to someone else's garden might be slightly objectionable. Anyway, there is not speaking to them, it's just not worth it! We put up our posts inside the boundary straight in to the patio and put up trellis to the max height of 2m, problem solved. They can't touch our fence as it's inside the boundary, plus it has a beautiful curve to it, so much nicer than what was there before. The pigeons love it! ( Tee Hee ) We used this We stained it dark to match the rest of our fencing ( which also annoyed them as they don't like the smell of creosote! ) Win win. Against a painted wall, i think it would really effective and the dark wood ( or you could paint it ) will show up your lovely plants. Just use 'post holders' to erect

Hi Malley. Thank you for asking my advice! For what it's worth here goes; I agree with you that no extension of the front window is needed, the oak framed porch with A frame exposed, extending further out as per celery girls input with wisteria and box plants looks great. Regarding colour, I'm afraid I disagree about the brown windows, to me they scream 80's developer taste and are very dating and clash with the red. If you are going to go to the expense of replacing the windows to enlarge the apertures I would consider grey or grey/green grey/blue, these will all tone nicely with the red brick, white would be too harsh. Love the idea of the juliette window BTW. Do a search in Houzz for red bricks and grey windows, you will get a lot of images to think about. I'm not sure I agree that adding solar panels to the roof will be an improvement, yes they will break up those tiles, but they are not a thing of beauty are they, could they be on the rear instead? If budget did allow, after you have done your extension, windows etc I would look into the cost of replacing those roof tiles with slate as again I think they are dating, but agree with Daisy that it would probably be expensive and would not increase value on the house. Hi, I really agree with the above statements about changing the roof to match your garage and potentially the door too. However, a cheaper and less time consuming solution could be just by adding some wall lights to the outside, to which would tie in with the rest of your beautiful homes features. You could try to paint the pvc, with the proper primer, but don't expect much from it. Temporary make-over. We live in a small white 1950 home (Netherlands) and have replaced most of our windows over the years, from wood to pvc (with woodgrain, white indoors, warm grey out). Better insulation (sound and cold), less to paint, but immense cost. Do you have the budget to change them now or does your budget limit you to rendering and paintjobs? Same for the porch redo, changing the location of the front door and/or roof shape. Rain in Snowdonia comes plenty, so I'd adress the driveway first. I'd suggest an infiltration pit* a few meters away from the house, with drains alongside the garage and house. Enlarge the 'patio' and steps and add gravel along the front, so water can sink into the ground quicker. *) We've made one by drilling 30mm holes in a large pvc rain barrel, burrying it upside down with plenty of gravel and sand around it and connecting our gutters and regular rain barrel overflow to it, since we have no sewage in the back of the house. You could add a pump to the pit for summer lawn sprays, but we decided not to.

Hey. my parents have got a wall on one side of their garden like this. For the main part their plants cover it but where they have a patio area they have put up some willow screening and put some pebbles and potted plants around the bottom to hide the bottom. looks good.

While the planting would be ideal, the building seems to be surrounded by concrete. Best quickest and cheapest option would be to put up batten and board to cover it up and either varnish or paint. We had a really ugly block wall at the side of our house which I disguised with some tongue and groove panelling about 7 years ago which I have painted. I have a raised bed there but it instantly looked better with the panelling on it even before I did the bed. It’s a little wild but you see the idea.

I would suggest some panelling like wicker or tongue and groove like Siobhan suggested. If the climbers don't go so well or take their time, at least you still have a nice surface to look at as opposed to the stone panels

Lovely garden Siobhan. Who doesn’t love a bit of wild! Is that Common Jasmine climbing up? One of my favourite climbers if a bit rampant! 😊

It is Sonia and tbh is a bit of a thug and totally wrong for the area which is pretty shady so little flowers therefore little fragrance! I am thinking of doing a major transplant this autumn. It’s extreme vigorous so has all but taken over that bed.
