I think the two door hallway access could be improved and simplified. Is it possible to do something to the stair take-off so that you don't get that whole wasted area at the bottom of the stairs? If not at the least I would get rid of the door on the left of it and close the opening This could form a small cupboard on the entrance hall side and will help with kitchen storage too as you could now use the new wall for units. You only need one door into the kitchen. I would definitely change the pantry door for something less intrusive. A sliding door could work there but a pocket door would be better. I think this space is very tight to include seating even if it was a banquette. Units protrude 600mm into the room and you are going to need all the walls as you do not have any space for full height units that is obvious to me. Would you consider blocking up a window to make room for more storage? It depends on what size kitchen you require. Could you post a plan showing the whole area with the wall marked where it will be removed?

Thank you for replies. I probably wasn't clear in the original message. The reason there is two doors is because it's currently two rooms that we are intending to knock into one. The smaller room is currently a bathroom. Here's the current plan. We have been deliberating with what to do with it and have had some advice from members on here. But we have decided to do the bare minimum downstairs to give us an eat-in kitchen. I want to retain the pantry as it is, or at least have a pantry that size if did move it. And use the hallway cupboard as a small utility with a washing machine and tumble dryer, as I don't want these appliances in the kitchen. Did consider using the existing bathroom space as a pantry with access into kitchen, and a utility with access from the hall. We want a downstairs loo/possibly shower room somewhere and can pinch some of the front bedroom for that. Upstairs, we are adding a dormer to increase the size and get in a bathroom and extra bedroom (currently only two bedrooms).

Stairs could be turned to go front to back, whereas currently they run back to front.

It’s mad to plan a whole house around a pantry. You have been really fixated on this tiny space for months and it’s about time you got over it. Have a decent kitchen rather than a room compromised by a small storage space and the door to enter it. The current kitchen has no walls to put tall units so nowhere for a tall fridge. Unless you do some building work, block up some windows your pantry will be a room with a fridge and ironing board and lots of wasted space.

Hi Rinked. It's not the same question, I was asking here about cabinetry layout. Apologies, my father has just died and I'm not keeping up to date with things easily and trying to juggle the house. Had to move in day after he died and it's hellish.

Since my dad died, I have decided to live life and not do too much to the house. Life is more important so I'm looking for as many ideas as possible. And wondered what people would think was suitable for a layout that just involved knocking the existing bathroom into the kitchen, and that alone.

Hence the separate question, as it was just about kitchen layout.

And yes we are going to block the window (north facing) and the door potentially to fit the fridge. The pantry is for food and I like it, it's what attracted me to the house. I don't think I'm mad. You'll have your ideas Jonathan, but there are other ideas to have also. Thanks.

Thank you for your concerns and condolences. What response? I don't believe I have said anything disrespectful to anyone, and indeed I am grateful for advice of others. Yes, I did start a new thread, but I thought because my question here was about the layout of a kitchen - eg where to put the cabinetry/appliances, that it needed a new thread under a new subject (kitchen). I wasn't asking here about the layout of the wider house. This question was specific to the kitchen layout.

I like the idea of having a pantry. I am sure a layout can be achieved that still offers a pantry space. I want to install cabinetry in it and a marble top. We do a lot of hosting and I have a small confectionary business, so the pantry is ideal and it's something I've always dreamed of. It's essential to the plans.

For context, before we moved in we had big plans, which I talked about on a different thread, but we have recently decided to do less. The death of my father has changed my perspective on life and I would rather we did minimal work to the house so we can spend the equity from the sale of our previous house on living and enjoying life. I don't want to plough loads into the building.

That said, we don't have the luxury of waiting. Dad died the day before we completed on our purchase and we had to move in. And the house is literally a time capsule to 1955 when you open the door. It needs rewiring, new plumbing, new windows, new doors, has asbestos. We cannot wait. We have to get started as soon as possible as we can't live with boxes piled up for long. Several of the rooms don't have any electric points at all!

Alas, onwards and upwards. I'm sure a plan that suits our needs will materialise in time. Thanks again for any offered advice.

You were not disrespectful, however it was confusing to find yet another post.

Sorry for your loss. And i'm fine with you wanting a kitchen layout only, but you could have mentioned it in your previous post. No hard feelings there. Life happens and from your perspective we're 'just internet people', that's ok.

If the renovation has to speed up, i'd still (or even more so) suggest keeping the bathroom. As soon as the upstairs one is functioning, the downstairs one can be a wc with laundry. That way you'll have the hallway cupboard for vacuum cleaner and such (and doesn't require plumbing).

Will try and make you a kitchen layout, though from my point of view the front to rear open space would work best and since you need rewiring and lileky plastering, please take a good look at the floorplan i made in your previous post, as it shouldn't be a whole lot more work.

Sidenote: if the current kitchen is in very bad shape and you need a quick fix, perhaps look for a simple secondhand or ikea and postpone the reno on this side of the house? There's plenty to do in the other rooms and grief isn't very helpful during planning/decisionmaking. Wish you well.

Ah Lizzie, you poor darling. It’s a terrible time to lose a parent and adding a house move on top makes life very very difficult. Live in the house for a while. It will become really clear what works for you and what doesn’t and this will give you time to grieve and come to terms with your loss. Repost at a later date. All the best.

@rinked Thank you for your message. It's much apprecaited. I'm not very au fait with how Houzz works, so apologies for the confusion. I think your idea about turning the existing bathroom into the utlity is a great one, and somethign I hadn't really considered as thought about either leaving as it is, or taking its space into the kitchen. I'm starting to think back-to-front would be a good solutino and will bring the west-facing sun at the front into the centre of the house.

@siobhanmcgee90 Thanks for your kind message. Yes, it's been terrible timing to move (and into a renovation project house) on top of dad dying. I also lost my job at the end of June! 3 of out of 5 major life stressors in the space of 6 weeks! Alas, what life throws at you can only make you stronger. Hoping in time our needs with the house will materialise so we can get started as soon as winter passes. Though not looking forward to winter with single glazed Crittal windows, poor heating, and no mod cons - don't have a shower, and don't have a washing machine! No evidence of there ever being one. But if an old man lived here until his 90s, then I am sure a couple in their 40s can cope!.
