Lighting and Layout Ideas Please!

Looking for some design/layout ideas...Knocking front room and back room together to create one long living room. There will be an RSJ (red rectangle) but it will be hidden so the ceiling will be flush.There will be indirect lighting all around the walls via architraves with built-in LEDs.Questions:

What lighting fixture(s) would you put on the ceiling and where would you place it/them? Nothing can go exactly where the RSJ is. Keen for the room to feel like one space so not sure on putting lights in what would have been the centre of each of the rooms in the original layout.
Any thoughts on seating layout? Would armchairs be better facing the media wall?
Where would you put the radiators!

All ideas/thoughts welcome!TIA

Simple ceiling lighting like track lighting or down lights would look really great - they would be able to be installed parallel to the RSJ or even in a grid pattern around the RSJ depending on what you would prefer. As for the radiator, a long slim one could be place below the bay window or a vertical one on the wall beside the double doors, again its more preference on what look you are going for. I would suggest moving the main sofa more towards the middle of the room, at the moment it very much looks like two separate spaces, whereas if you move the main sofa backwards slightly, perhaps just on the other side of the RSJ, and turn the arm chairs diagonally to face the media wall - it would look more as one room and a corner or reading nook near the bay window would finish that area off nicely.

Holly, not a bad dialema and what great spaces you have to play with! There are so many options for you here. I have worked on these type of properties for over 9 years and I always provide the same advice to a client. You will need to consider how you want to use the space/the environment that you want to create in order to determine where you will place the furniture. Key elements such as how you intend to travel through the property, what is practical for you, how your family spend their time at home etc. will all dictate the interior configuration. For example, some of my clients would look to create a formal reception room at the front of the property, introducing a door from the hallway. They would then utilise the second reception room as a play/TV area, library, piano space or even insert the kitchen within this zone and create a very large open plan dining/entertainment space (large sofa/TV area) at the rear, directly connected to the garden. As you can see there are so many points to consider. Have you thought about appointing a team to assist you with the space planning/visualising how it could look?

Hi SteffyTaylor, is it worth extending 1m back? Will you loose too much garden for gaining not a huge amount of space? Personally I think I'd spend the money on big bi-fold doors all along the back elevation. As the kitchen is staying where it is I'd suggest having the dining table running adjacent to the RH wall in the photo and have your living area opposite, with dual aspect into your new courtyard and garden. Lots of tall plants in the courtyard would be great and I'd think about adding a door from the bedroom (as well as the extension) out into the courtyard, that would be a lovely place to have breakfast on a summer's morning! Hi Ollie, How about moving the door into the Utility Room so that is accessible from the Kitchen side, thus freeing up the wall where the current Utility room door is, and I would recommend you have some form of wall storage on that wall, as you don't immediately see it when you walk into the room. The kids benches could be off that wall too, so that on either side of the chimney breast and as you walk in the room you could have some open shelves / artwork. When the kids are not playing, you could turn this area into a yoga place! And yes, I agree your table could overlap a little with your existing house, unless you have a large beam above, not hidden in the thickness of the floor joists above. Also, I wonder if a round / oval table will work better in your case, and don't forget the lighting relative to your rooflights!

It’s probably too long for one seating area. I’d have a sofa opposite what used to the be the fire and a chair in front of the window. To avoid the corridor feel you need to add things in the middle of the space, so add a coffee table/ottoman (a round one I think would work better) and bring the sofa away from the wall a little. Use a rug to zone that area. You could have a reading area at the kitchen end of the room? If you paint the shorter walls a darker tone it will ”correct“ the rooms proportions. Mirrors on the long walls can help but think about what it reflects! I think painting the skirting boards in the wall colour will help too as your eyes are just drawn to the white atm

Seating, lights (wall & ceiling) and radiators:

It's quite allright to have a flush mount on one side and a pendant in the same style.

(I have a flush mount in the lounge that is hardly ever on, plus a pendant over the table we do use. Both white glass.)

Wall mounted preferably dimmable.

And rotate that media wall, during the day you also want to see the whole room and window.
