brick for black cladding

Could anyone please recommend a brick that works well with black cladding. It’s a self build house and would like it to look like a new barn conversion, will have black frame windows. Thanks

Is the black cladding wood or timber effect? Black is pretty neutral so I would decide what shade of brick you like first. Would it be possible to visit a brick manufacturer or does your architect have brick slip samples? There are many different colour variations from reddish, more yellow to grey. You need to see samples in the flesh to decide. Its an expensive mistake to make if you get it wrong. Look at as many examples of brick barn conversions as you can first to get an idea. I prefer stone to brick, especially blue lias. I only really like historic brick on period houses.

My first thought was a lovely orange-brown, the more aged the better, although many companies now recreate that aged look with new bricks. Reclaimed bricks are another option. Depends if you want to create an older classic look or not.

Hi Tina, I totally agree with the miss matching bricks- it either has to be so different that it is clear that it is an extension, nothing worse than trying to blend the two together and then not quite hitting the mark. If you go down the render approach then I too would highly recommend a Krend or Webber render- these have a colourant within the product and as such they should never need any maintenance- ideal if your near trees as you can just blast it with the pressure washer. Another idea could be to do a timber frame extension with a timber cladding on the outside. This should be costed out - it could potentially be more expensive on the materials element, but should hopefully be cheaper in the labour department, and currently labour is pretty pricey and hard to come by. Just a thought, ping some pictures over when your done as would love to see it.

Hello HL, Yes I know they're PVC and they can be painted.. I'll put a link here but there are several ways either prime with something like zinsser bulls eye 123 and then a colour of your choosing or a specific colour from a site I'll add.. I think a dark brown could be nice. With the wooden cladding... If they need replacing I'd do like for like but then give it a good dark wood stain and perhaps do this once yearly... It really would be so much more beautiful that way by keeping the wood.. :)) http://www.kolorbond.co.uk/kolorbond-paint-plastic-pvc-upvc One last thing about my foliage suggestion... Some buxus balls planted along under the windows where the aggregate is.. I think would finish this house off beautifully..

I suggest painting everything that's brown or green a soft, light, neutral antique white that links back to the stone work. If your leaving the brick in what looks like a yellowish sandstone colour then match the gables to this. Only if you paint the brickwork would it be worth using a more modern colour scheme such as grey. The white trims, details and edgings would still work. The window frames really date the exterior. Paint them, or better, replace them, depending on your budget. I would replace the light at the front door. It seems intrusive/obstructive with the way it hangs down. Paint the light pole in the yard the same neutral off white as the trims. I know this is not the edgy modern look but there is a lot going-on on this facade and it all needs to be brought back together and be harmonious.

P.s. I would measure the roofing tiles too given half a chance. So you can assure yourself all colours on the exterior work well together. (Even if a roof tile looks grey to you, it still belongs to one of those hue families,,,,why fight with it when you can harmonise?) 🤓
