Dormer bungalow facelift / cladding colour ?

We have a dormer bungalow as shown, and are planning on replacing the fascias, soffits and guttering as they are old wooden and rotting in places. At the same time we are planning on replacing the cladding with PVC as well, but can't decide on colour - i.e. would white brighten up the whole house or look odd so should we go for a wood effect ? also can't decide whether to get white guttering or keep as is with black. Have also considered rending the brick if that would improve but not sure if that would make a difference ? Grateful for any comments, thanks.

Hello HL,

Definitely don't replace wooden cladding under window with anything other than the same if it needs it! I'd paint windows and architrave a dark brown to match and guttering black. Think it would be lovely and far less work. All you need then are some plants.. :))

Thanks for the comment - the windows are PVC so can't be painted. The cladding is very worn and there are a couple of bits missing so needs a good repair/paint, and we thought having PVC would avoid having to do it again in the future? will consider your suggestions though, thanks.

Hey So the latest update is that we're still busy with the project but in the closing stages. We've done a lot of work inside more than originally planned we've gutted the house and replaced everything and changed the floor plan to modernise it and make more of an open plan space downstairs. We've done the rear extension which is now dedicated to kitchen with a central island running parallel with the doors . A lovely sized bungalow! I think the problem here is that the scape seems to blend into one and there is no focal point. A coat of paint to the render would work wonders and I agree with the other comments to add in and change the current shrubbery. If you have chance to change the doors, I would suggest a colour other than brown, with so much roof space the brown is very overwhelming. I would also suggest some outside downlighting against the render. Good lighting can improve the look of any home. This doesn't have to be expensive either. Hope this helps and good luck

Well, it's obvious that it will be the same size whether it is painted or not - and you can't just phone the planning inspectorate up and ask! My question relates to whether the optical appearance of a lighter colour dormer is smaller and less intrusive than a darker colour dormer??

I'd paint the tiles dark grey. What about planting up the two square bits at the front of the drive with something evergreen in the middle and coloured trailing plants at the front. Then some dark grey troughs or planters with a similar planting scheme by the wall. That way, the eye would be drawn away from the actual bungalow itself to the attractive plants which would brighten things up considerably. Get rid of the existing shrubs which look to be old and unruly. Put a large, modern door number (possibly illuminated) on the wall. Look at Etsy - there are loads on there and you'll be spoiled for choice.

Hello HL,

Yes I know they're PVC and they can be painted.. I'll put a link here but there are several ways either prime with something like zinsser bulls eye 123 and then a colour of your choosing or a specific colour from a site I'll add.. I think a dark brown could be nice. With the wooden cladding... If they need replacing I'd do like for like but then give it a good dark wood stain and perhaps do this once yearly... It really would be so much more beautiful that way by keeping the wood.. :))

One last thing about my foliage suggestion... Some buxus balls planted along under the windows where the aggregate is.. I think would finish this house off beautifully..

Id put a canopy or porch up and match the cladding with whatever colour front door you decide on. A soft sage would look nice on the canopy and door and would give a cottage look.
