Design Dilemma Fireplaces

Help 50s fireplace

Anyone have any ideas how I can improve the look of this fireplace? I have a love/hate relationship with it. I like some aspects but hate the lip on the hearth stone and the fact that the grey tiles can some times look purplish. Is there anything I can do to improve it, or is it just ugly and needs replacing?

You could try a few simple updates to enhance the look:

- Paint or Resurface. A fresh coat of high-temperature paint in a modern colour could help tone down the purplish tint of the tiles and your walls.

- Change the hearth if the lip bothers you, you could replace with a sleek stone, marble or slate slab.

- Accessories like a large vase, candles, or a decorative firewood stack can draw attention away from the elements you don't like.

Lovely fireplace - but I think that the reason it seems out of kilter is the difference in size between the fire and the chimney. How about making the chimney breast the same width as the fireplace by simple boarding, and then make a feature out of this beautiful fire by painting the whole of the fire and the chimney in a bold colour. If you have another colour in the room to pick up this colour, use that - otherwise try plum colour, and co-ordinate with same colour cushions to add to your blue chair/settee. I also think there are too many small bits and bobs on the hearth and the shelf. Clear most of these and use one large, tall statement piece one side on the hearth - say a very tall silver vase or tall silver ornament. At the moment all the things you have are the same colour, and I feel that it needs more texture and height, but keep it simple. Hope this is of help.

And where the tree of life was, we have the beginnings of a gallery wall, though I don't have a pic yet. We're looking at getting a white wood-burning stove where the fireplace is, getting rid of the fireplace completely, just having a brick-lined opening for the stove to fit in. Any thoughts?

Front door choice for 50s house- help!

Looking for a external front door for our 50s house.... I'm after something that is in keeping and nothing too "faux" or period as I think it will look wrong. That said, We will be pitching the flat roof so I'm not hell bent on it looking 50s just nothing that looks odd. Finding it very hard so any advice gratefully received!

The Mantle/surround can be larger than the chimney access. Think of the fireplace as flue, rather than a limitation on the fire or fire surround and you may have more options. Can the woodburner sit in the room on the new hearth rather than in that hole in the wall? No need to even change the 'fireplace' size necessarily? e.g. Heres my fireplace - granted the burner is inside the wall - but you get the idea - burner vs. hole vs. mantle/surround can all be different sizes. Burner can also have back flue's ie. a dog leg back into the chimney before going up? I'm a 200 year old cottage, not a 50s house - so obv. also ignore the style! I'd draw the wall to scale on paper, add the stove & hearth to scale, and scale the surround based on those fixed items. Ignore the hole in the wall.

I removed all of mine in my 1930s house as I just hated them. I don’t find anything attractive about these types of fireplaces, sorry!

Remove and replace it if you need a working fireplace. Your floor is lovely and the fireplace is spoiling it. You could put it to a poll?

The carpet and the current fireplace blend beautifully, but don't seem to 'gel' with the hard flooring. Depending on the style of the rest of the room/ house, I'd be inclined to scrap (or sell - genuine retro and vintage fireplaces are much desired in some quarters !) the fireplace and find something you like to replace it, bearing in mind the flooring that it will sit by. After that, you may need to upgrade the carpet.

Hey there!

Hearth Lip: If the step bothers you, consider extending it slightly to blend better or painting it to match the floor.

Tile Color: If the grey looks too purplish, a tile paint or lime wash in a warmer tone could help.

Surround Refresh: Adding a wood mantel, reeded panels, or updating the inner tiles could modernize it.

Styling: Your decor is lovely! A taller vase, layered artwork, or even a darker firebox could shift the vibe.

If you still don’t love it after some tweaks, then replacing it might be the way to go but I think it has potential!
