I think your room is lovely as it is and so doesn’t need much to improve it. How about adding some plants in pots to your shelving unit, it has space for quite a few. Adding textured cushions and a throw to your sofa such as linen, faux sheepskin might help to cosy things up but I’d still keep the colours neutral. I’m not a fan of adding ‘pops of colour’. You mentioned artwork, can we see the other walls in the room.

It’s hard to see where you can add art. You could create more of a vignette on the fire. Move the clock left a couple of inches, art propped on the right and either a tall plant or vase of stems to the left of the clock. The art and cushions are John Lewis, 20% off atm. Not sure if you like the art but it’s only £24 and the size seems right!

Add a small throw over the arm using the darkest colour in the rug

A rechargeable lamp might also work on the table but yet to find one that would work with your floor lamp

This cushion is also nice (JL again), might pick up the rug pattern?

I would buy some parlour palm plants (Ikea stocks them quite cheaply) and have at least 3 of them in front of the window. They are lush and very green and will lift the space as well as the east facing room and windows will really suit them. If that sounds like too much high maintenance then I would add smaller plants to the top of the bookcase and some other items to brighten it up. There is plenty of bookshelf inspiration on houzz.

&tradition flowerpot lamps are battery operated and come in many colours.

Yes, the furniture is off central due to the tv. My family and I “debated” that and I lost.
I’m going to buy some plants for the window area and copy the fireplace treatment ideas. Add some dark amber and I think that will hugely help the place

How about some interesting items. You could have fun looking for some ornaments or similar you like. i like looking at second hand objects.

I agree it isa little bland. How about a feature wall behind the sofa?. Pick a colour to introduce within wallpaper and or as paint then pick the colour up in cushions and curtains. A few ornaments on the window board,mantelpiece and on the bookcase would add interest too. Side tables with table lamps on and floor lamps. Pictures are needed on the walls and perhaps some plants. You have the bones of a good room. Good luck.

Definietly add some plants - by the window and on the bookcase.

Cushions and throws are a great way to add more colour to a space, but don't forget to add some pattern too.

Colours that typically go with green and blue are pinks, reds, oranges, purples and yellows.

All of your lighting is very functional; you could add more colour and cosiness by introducing some decorative lighting - colourful fabric lampshades would instantly lift up your space!

Although I loved it before, your room has burst into life and those subtle changes have added warmth. I can’t believe the difference, on my screen anyway, in the colour of your sofa from the first photos to now. The shelving unit is now much more interesting than just a place to store books and I think there’s still room for a couple of trailing plants? Now you have a taste for it I’m sure you’ll continue to add more pattern and colour to the room. Well done and thanks for sharing.

Perhaps change the white Venetians and add something coloured or just coloured soft curtains with the Venetians to soften the window. Coloured table and floor lamps will add more warmth but it is already looking better

Your bookcase really zings now, especially with that flower pot/vase in the orange/blue and soft green, so clever to find that.

I think curtains would be good but we’re on a tight budget and theyre so expensive!

When I saw your room initially the first thing that struck me was the plainness of your windows with the light Venetians and white pelmet, however I think it suits the room for them to be as plain and simple as they are. One thing I did think though was to have slim curtains on either side of your window wall, so behind the tv and over on the right. They would only ‘touch’ the edge of your blinds and, because they’d be so narrow, they would never move but would simply frame the the outer windows on each side. If you were to go for this idea you’d need to extend the pelmet at each side and ‘hide’ the small rails behind the new pelmet. As you’d only need a pair of the narrowest size of curtains it wouldn’t cost much.
