I have a hall way very similar to yours, when we moved in it was painted white. I presume the previous owner wanted to improve light levels. It had the reverse effect! It made the space seem gloomier which may be related to the front of the house being north facing, what direction does your house face as this may influence paint choices. I love colour but go neutral in a space like a hall way as it links all the rooms in the house and in Victorian houses is very difficult to decorate, ceiling heights etc. We used Farrow and Balls London stone as it remained a true neutral,,many other beige/greige had pink/ purple tones which showed in artificial light. I agree with the other comments about stripping the doors particularly if you do decide on white, it will provide contrast and warmth. You could paint a darker colour beneath the dado rail. I would suggest careful placement of mirrors to maximise/ steal light from other rooms. Also pictures with glass bring light to the area too. You could mount pictures on the stair case in line with the treads. I agree with the earlier comment about mounts and frames. I would go for a runner to show off your lovely stair case. Does the door to your kitchen/diner have a glass panel (s) in it, if not I would suggest adding one or two depending on the type of original door you have that will pull light in from that room. Good lighting will help too, it all depends on your personal preference, you could have pendants downstairs and spotlights upstairs. Good luck with it and hope you enjoy the process

You actually have a great hallway. Not sure the ceiling lights will add much so do consider spotlights angled to highlight your artwork. This would not cost much using a standard radiator cover and get a glazing company to do as large a mirror as you can fit. You could easily go dark on the stairs as you seem to have good light. I would think about painting the door a lighter colour if you can. If not, consider painting the surrounding wall to match so it fades away. Consider replacing both units in the wider area with a decent shoe storage unit or consider getting one made. Alternatively, if you are on a small budget, paint that storage unit the same as the walls. Add a shelf to your other unit and use for shoes. You do need coat hanging space so how about that blank wall and just add a long coat rail.

Hi all, I’ve made a start on the hallway, changing the sliding doors on the right isn’t an option at the moment, I’m thinking that I may get rid of them altogether in time, we will need to skim all ceilings at some point…we are currently building an extension and when that’s done we will start on this side but I think these changes have warmed up the space…I’m going to get a rug too…but with the work going on I can’t put it down yet anyway 😊 I got the paint for half price, it wasn’t my first choice but when I saw the reduction I though I’d just go for it and I’m super happy. Farrow and Ball Drop Cloth…the only new addition is the radiator cover everything else I had already. Thanks for your help.
