Behind bookcase storage

I have a 6' long by 9' wide wall which is in the traffic flow (from family room to laundry and garage). We'd like to use it as bookshelf space. We have 24-30" of depth to work with. We'll do storage drawers on the bottom. However, I hate to lose the upper "depth" behind the books. If our bookshelves are 12" deep, then what are some creative ways we can use the remaining 12"+ behind the bookshelves?

I'm thinking pull/roll out wine storage...but that's as far as I've gotten. Thoughts?

I am having a hard time visualizing the space. Is it just a wall 6 feet long with open space on either end or a 6 foot niche in a wall that is 30" deep. it could be as simple as deep drawers or cabinets on the bottom and 12" shelves above with free standing console and wall hung shelves. If open on ends, custom bult ins could have concealed pullout shelves behind the 12' shelves open to the front of the cabinets. It could also be a tall built in with deep shelves on the backs of the upper doors that opened to the front. Depends on if you want to display things or hide them.

I've seen bookcase doors that hide a room behind them. Perhaps you could use this idea--bookcase doors that face the walkway but pull the doors open to reveal storage space.

A warning however; the more that you store, the more time you spend managing what you have stored, and the more effort it will be to move or downsize. So be sure that what you store is really worth storing.

For me the trick is defiantly positioning lay some down and stand some up, add some personal decorative pieces to break up the books Play with height and groupings of things maybe put something tall with 2 smaller things add some pictures or even those little boards with sayings on. Mostly though I think it's important too add some beautiful things that mean something to you and incorporate them with your books.

I would paint the bookcase and the the wall in a similar grey to your armchair,Create "boxes" by painting some shelves pale grey and a couple in mustard . Maybe back one box in mirror glass to put some coloured glasses/decanters on as a drinks unit. Put your pale mustard photo frame into the darker box and collect interesting items using the same colour theme. Hope that helps!

Lovely link thank you carolins. I have spent hours looking at IKEA hacks. HI minnie and no I dont do DIY, a terrible at it sadly! The alcoves are just over a metre wide which is tricky with billy bookcases, the skirtings are fab, they are huge, around 30cm tall and moulded and there is a picture rail too. I would have the shelves up to this point. There are sockets at the back of the alcove so I need access to these so any shevles would have to be fitted above these. I did wonder about doing sth like this (using two sets of billys with a dividing upright in the middle to fill up the alcove width) but the shelves are a tad shallow and am worried it might look a bit cheap....? http://www.ikeahackers.net/2015/06/billys-alcove-alchemy.html

Thank you Carolina! Some great stuff on Laredoute, I don't know how I missed them when searching online. I do like the Archivita system, it's pretty much identical to the CB2 shelving, just a shame the shelves aren't white. Could spray them maybe? Thank you again!

I too am having some problem understanding the issues IMO 30" deep drawers are going to be quite deep and what are you planning to store in this whole plan. Do you have 100s of books or is this more for decor stuff? How wisde is this hallway now ? Maybe post some pics of the space

What are you planning to store in this area?

My parent home had a 40 foot long gallery (hallway) that led from the main area of the home to the bedrooms. The hallway was paneled (not the cheap paneling of the 70s, but with sheets of wood) One side had several beautiful paintings, the other had hidden cabinets with clerestory windows over them. They looked like a wall, but you pressed on the wall and a door would open. Some had hanging space, some had a combination of shelves with pullout drawers on the bottom.

I am planning on hiding the closet doors in my master after I found this video.

Depending on how you plan on using this space you may want to have things displayed or hidden. or a combination of display areas and hidden areas.

Higher shelves that are deeper than about 15" are pretty useless as you can't get to the things in the back without a ladder or step stool.

They do make pull out pantry shelving and units with shelves inside and shelves attached to the inside of the door that will utilize all of the space, but make everything more accessible.
