Hi Danny, currently looking at your photo I can see trees, Sky, and space which is nice. If you cram too much on the plot I feel it would look over developed. However having a large family you do need space indoors and converting the garage would be a good idea. Regarding the extra bedroom it's a shame to fill the space between you and your neighbour. However I do appreciate the families needs. Regarding a log cabin, I just felt a wooden form of carport with storage shed at back may be better on the eye. A softer look, less brick. I do think it's an attractive house as it is and would not waste money on render. I wasn't thinking of ceiling price.

Hi Shane, Really interesting property you are about to buy. Lots of possibilities to create a nice place where to live. About your question, an open plan living space is completely compatible with having a two-storey home. Open style stairs are the best solution for this, but where to place them will be even more imporant I guess. Do not think about stairs as an element that blocks or interrumpts the space, but as a piece of your open plan ground floor which can even be its main feature. Hi all...first time query and hope someone can offer inspiration! I'd like to add a small porch on to my main entrance( which is at the back of my 170msq house and is north-facing) and I've attached a photo of it as it is now. The house is an ICF building with a standard, off-white render finish. Facing the door, 9m behind the house is a newly constructed timber finish garden office, using the same dark-green window frames. I plan to enclose the yard with timber-fencing to form a vaguely courtyard-feel... My question: I think a 3x2m (ish) size enclosed flat-roof porch with some render, some timber, and dark-green window frames could work well .....but I'd like someone with a designer/architect's eye to give me a steer in the right direction. Hi Nicola, when thinking about the outside of your house it's always important to consider the style of your home (when is was built) and what others on your street have. There are some rules on what the local council will permit too, so best to check with them first. Whilst it's nice for everyones home to have a unique personality, i believe it looks best when colours and design are in keeping with the original character of the house and road. 1950's homes are typically mid century, so think simplicity and clean lines. White wood siding in white can be a nice way to bring character to the houses facade. Plain, small format roof tiles in clay or slate are ideal materials for this era. I think your front door is where you get to have the most fun. Perhaps consider a colour. 1950's colours could be quite playful. I'd love to work with you on your inteior when the time comes.
