So since I posted about 6 weeks ago we now have a lovely wooden floor, fire has been removed and left chimney breast with cables available so we can mount the TV. Have our old sofas sat side by side under the window but still not sure how to plan it all out. Hopefully once painted and we start visiting some furniture shops the rest will just fall into place :) thanks all for comments, would welcome any ideas

The tv is the focal pointof the room, and it's really high up. If you want the room to feel homely and I agree with you about texture, I would address several issues. Warmth. A home needs warmth. For me, this means getting rid of pure white, it only works in extremely light spaces and warm spaces (think Greece). It can feel bleak when paired with grey so I would address the colours. JUst a tinge of warmth in a white is enough to change the temeprature so if you like pale walls it needn't be pure white. Warm woods and stone colours are an easy way of making a space homely. If you're keeping the floor, and it has a tinge of warmth compared to the stair carpet which looks very cool grey, then a sisal rug and coloured sofas would lift it. Ochre, olive green, tan, something warm, not cool. Proportions. As C Harrison has shown above, a long low unit along the wall would transform the appearance of the room and enable you to add other elements so that the TV isn't the dominant feature. I would rotate a rug the other way and get one as large as the space will allow. Have a look at Bo Concept for sofas, they are a siilar price to John Lewis but much sleeker in design. On paints, Dulux Trade White is very different to Dulux trade Brilliant white. the brilliant white looks cold and a bit blue, the White has a bit of warmth. Johnsons white is very cold and slightly grey.

If you like the location of the sofas, and just working with what you have - I'd move the recordplayer-drawers so it's on the wall to the right of the door (facing the fireplace-wall), then bring that 3-seater sofa forward a foot so it's not against the wall and move it slightly to the left so the little side table has a bit more space too. Move the guitar over to that wall too. I think the art isn't right - the small bits are quite small and the large piece above fireplace should be something that is wider rather than longer - so I'd relocate that to somewhere else in the house and keep an eye out for something larger or 2 or 3 pieces that can be hung on that wall together to create a wide view and add some interest to the space. Or maybe try the big piece of art to the left of the fireplace and hung a little lower - it's too tall for the space above the fireplace. To make the colours work better together you need something which contains the lilac and the blue - cushion/s, a throw for the footstool/sofa, a piece of art, a tray on the footstool - not all of these, but something more intentional. And it can be a lighter/darker shade of the colour, not the exact colour - and it can just be a small piece within a larger pattern that repeats the two main colours in the room. I think that's perhaps what you are thinking a rug and/or curtains could do - which would be possible, but I don't think you need a rug in the room and I'd try a couple of new cushions and a blanket first. Curtains - you could do roman blinds to add some colour/softness - you'd need three and you should hang them as high as possible above the windows so they don't cover too much window (and it'll also make the room look taller with taller windows). Or get a curtain pole that goes all the way past the windows so the curtains can hang to the sides and not in front of the windows all the time - again, will make the windows look bigger and stop the light being blocked. I don't think curtains are the answer though and you have blinds already for privay and light control. One more thing would be to paint the radiator the same colour as the walls to make it disappear.

To visually shorten the room, I'd be tempted to put shelves all the way across the short wall to the left of the entrance door - along the back of that dark sofa. Then bring that sofa forward so it's closer to the blue sofa (assuming the play tent can move elsewhere). Then just have a long, low unit below the TV to balance it out. And lose the rug islands and get a big one that zones the whole seating area.
