Hello lisa_bentley30, as it is not a traditional style fire with a chimney breast and alcoves what I would suggest is that you paint the walls around it.. Perhaps move the box that is butting up against the right hand side and give it more room.. Also why not add a mirror or something to lift the mantle. It needs something to give it a bit more impact and create a focus. (You can still add a few choice ornaments) Go for something plain and not too decorative for the mirror and make sure it is the right size, not too small or too big.. if you like the mirror idea that is! Why not put a few little logs in the fire basket and really show it off more! :))

Hi. You only have a few pics in your ideabook so I don't really know what style you like or what else is in the room. If in budget I would do something like this with subtle black and white geometric tiles. The surround could either be white or a dark grey https://www.houzz.co.uk/photos/contemporary-bedroom-contemporary-bedroom-phvw-vp~15424094 In terms of accessorising you could have a round mirror with just a vase of flowers in front which sit slightly in front of the mirror, choose informal style flowers such as blossom etc alternatively you could just add a piece of art with maybe a couple of bowls, maybe with some brass to pick up the fire, in different sizes on the mantle off centre

Hi Claire, Firstly the room looks really good, I like the eclectic mix of furniture, it really suites the room. This is how I would approach the room: 1 I would be cautious painting the fireplace, have you considered a lime wash to soften the wood tones then find a beautiful timber coffee table in the centre of the room, this expanse of timber in the middle of the floor would help to tie the room together. 2 The gold frames on the wall are a little under scale. Re frame larger and replace the light beige surround with a taupe mount to add warmth. Use non reflective glass. 3 An antique chandelier from the ceiling rose would look amazing in this room. 4 I love the fact the Chinese cabinet does not match but the TV does stand out. ideally wall mount the TV or even better find a cabinet for it. 5 Re the green, I would use cushions on the sofa to bring the green in. I would suggest taking everything off of your mantel (bar the lanterns), and mounting the mirror above it to the wall - don't have it leaning. The cupboard in the middle of the fireplace really needs moving... if you don't have enough storage in your side board without it then I'd suggest replacing both units for one bigger storage unit. You could also get rid of all your cushions, and replace with some brighter ones and a sofa throw - I would also move your sofa with its back against the window. And as people have said above, the rug is too small for the room, by replacing this for a bigger one it'll bring your space altogether. And lastly, check out Desenio.co.uk for artwork.
