Do I paint the cabinets?
Comments (40)If you want to paint, paint. I think I'd agree with the people who suggest professional re spraying though unless you love diy and love the idea of being able to change the colour yourself relatively quickly. I recently painted a dresser (heavily stained and varnished wood, nowhere near as nice as yours) and a chest of drawers (bog standard orange pine) and unless you can take the wood right back it takes coats and COATS and a lot of patience to get a good finish. It is worth it though! Personally, I'd go for a greyish blue on the bottom half, White worktops, and paint the uppers the same white as the tiles (there's nothing intrinsically wrong with them, a classic choice that won't date). Put in a steel splashback behind the cooker (it should be possible to fit over tiles) to tone with your handles and a hard wearing natural fibre rug on the floor to break up the dark grey. A few wood accessories and the usual bits and pieces to finish....See MoreKitchen cabinet advice required! Please help!
Comments (31)If you've got the time and the inclination (and budgets are tight) I reckon it's worth giving the paint a go to see how it looks. Lots of the kitchens we're doing for clients now are ones with painted finishes and although (as mentioned above) this isn't the most classic style/a bit old fashioned it will look completely different painted. New handles... save up for the kitchen you really want!...See MoreKitchen Cabinets: Hand Painted vs. Spray Painted
Comments (13)Hi Mrs Lanks, I have specified a lot of kitchens so have a reasonable understanding of the pro's and con's. 1 Don't go for this, the paint "will" chip off. Also, the undercoat applied by your decorator will not grip as well and it will be a thicker coat which can cause your doors to bind. 2 This is my prefered option if you're going for a traditional look. If the factory applies a spray "matt" undercoat they get into all the nooks and crannies and this will provide a stable surface for the hand painting to grip to. I would recommend a Farrow & Ball or Little Green paint as these are based on English heritage colours. Don't allow your decorator to mix to the colour, buy the real thing. You will have to accept that a hand-painted finish is more delicate and it will need re doing over time but it has the advantage that touching up is easy and repainting at a later date can give you a fresh look. Greys are very in at the moment but this will look dated in a few years so having the option to repaint adds longevity to your purchase. 3 Painting in the factory is more durable. The issue is that it can look a bit flat but if you want a more contemporary look, that's a good thing. It looks dead if you want a more traditional look. A spay finish will definitely last longer but if it does chip it does not repair as easily. Hope that helps, Martin www.angel-martin.com...See Morewould you paint these cabinets?
Comments (17)Took me nearly a year to decide whether to paint or not but finally done. Just need to get new fridge freezer now. Got new worktops and sinks and did the utility too to use up the worktop. Glad I didn’t waste money getting them sprayed as hubby made an excellent job hand painting them....See More- 12 years ago
