not my favorite but wood storage and enclosure could be similar. could have a mantel. could also do some stone veneer around the box, I just wouldn't have a lot of heavy stone

You could bring the openings up 24" off the deck and make them feel more like windows. Then you wouldn't need to worry about a railing.
