For me two things, but they are slightly structural. Firstly, we knocked a hole in a structural wall and inserted a small concrete lintel, just to put the fridge in and make it flush with the kitchen wall (on the other side we boxed it in in the hall and made a coat cupboard). The second thing I would always do again was to build out the cooker wall cupboards by about 15cm to create a raised shelf behind the cooker. This means that bottles of oils etc can be off the actual workspace, and more importantly, the gap means that wall behind doesn't get splashed. It was it in a Conran book and it really works.
