This detached Victorian house was extended to accommodate the needs of a young family with three small children. The programme was organized into two distinctive structures: the larger and higher volume is placed at the back of the house to face the garden and make the best use of the south orientation and to accommodate a large Family Room open to the new Kitchen. A longer and thinner volume, only 1.15m wide, stands to the western side of the house and accommodates a Toilet, a Utility and a dining booth facing the Family Room. All the functions that are housed in the secondary volume have direct access either from the original house or the rear extension, thus generating a hierarchy of served and servant volumes, a relationship that is homogeneous to that between the house and the extension. The timber structures, while distinctive in their proportions, are connected by a shallow volume that doubles as a bench to create an architectural continuum and to emphasize the effect of a secondary volume wrapped around a primary one. While the extension makes use of a modern idiom, so that it is clearly distinguished from the original house and so that the history of its development becomes immediately apparent, the size of the red cedar cladding boards, left untreated to allow a natural silvering process, matches that of the Victorian brickwork to bind house and extension together. As the budget did not make possible the use a bespoke profile, an off-the-shelf board was selected and further grooved at mid point to recreate the brick pattern of the façade. The brief for this project was to create a multifunctional space that included a kitchen, dining and living area. The property did not benefit from a large garden so it was important that the depth of the extension did not significantly compromise the outdoor space. We therefore extended the kitchen into the rear reception room, which created a much larger open planned area and allowed for the installation of a small WC. Open planning the kitchen to the rear reception room also provided this area with some much need natural light via the skylights and doors in the new extension. The fact the extension was not excessively deep enabled us to obtain planning permission for a good external wall height, which is complimented internally by the vaulted ceiling. The back of the extension has been finished with a large set of slim profile sliding doors, providing uninterrupted views of the beautifully designed garden. The final result is a light and airy space which accommodates the kitchen, living and dining areas that the client required.

This Port Melbourne Heritage Cottage extension re-imagines this family home on a constrained urban site. The clients are a young family with a brief that was seeking space to grow and extend their enjoyment of the house and location that they love. Having had a previous extension slotted into the back of it the workers cottage was full of character but was lacking in appropriate space for the contemporary life of a young family. The concept was to carefully articulate an upper floor extension with some internal reconfiguration that would compliment the existing character and scale of the Contributory Heritage building whilst increasing the sense of light and volume internally. A restricted palate of materials with large new openings add a richness whilst creating city views and increased natural light. Photography by Tom Ross
