Hi Claire, what is the floor construction on the floor is it joists? there are different options and I have many years experience of dealing with these types of projects. If you are not sure then take up a section and check whats underneath the floorboards. I haven't checked on the plan yet with regard to sqm of area, however I would be wary of electric underfloor heating as the running costs are extremely high unless you have solar panels. We must consider the construction of the home (solid vs suspended flooring) and the type of insulation being used (e.g. foam board, fibreglass). Next we must consider the hardwood itself (e.g. Oak, Maple, Mahogany) and how to eliminate draughts and damp. Solid vs Suspended Flooring Solid floors consist of a concrete base topped with insulation and fibreboard. Suspended flooring places parallel rows of brick supports between the concrete base and the fibreboard layer. Remember, hardwood floors will retain heat for much longer than a softwood or carpeted floor. Smart use of sunlight could also help to keep hardwood floors warm in winter. Hi Ellie, you have made a good decision on removing the wall. Your new bathroom will look much more spacious. We agree with you on creating a wet room in the right hand corner. It is much easier to install a concealed wetroom shower tray in the first floor, because in older family houses, the floor construction is usually wooden. The problem would be to fit a concealed shower tray into the concrete ground floor construction. So the installation in your case shouldn’t be a problem. We advise you to opt for bigger tiles, so that there is less grouting and therefore less likely for water leaking through over time.
