small bathroom layout advice
We are in the process of getting a building warrant to move a wall which would allow for more space for a walk in shower in our small bathroom - see photos.
My dilemma is that we would really like to fit in a Japanese soaking tub along the back wall under the window. However the people helping us to submit the drawings have said that this will not leave enough activity space for the shower and have suggested putting the bath along the left wall (see picture) which only leaves a 527 opening to get through.
In the drawings they have put a rounded shower tray in the space, however we would like this space to be a walk in wet room shower.
I have attached a picture of a wall in shower with half wall - I would like something similar but would have soaking bath built in where the toilet is in this pic!
My question is: if we were to make the entire space in the right corner a walk in wet room, would we still need the activity space where we want to put the bath?
My 2nd question is: how practical is a wet room shower in a first floor flat?
And finally, is there a better design configuration for this bathroom that I’m not seeing?

Comments (3)From what your describing we had the same thing going on,I didn't like the ensuite( too small) and the bathroom needed to be bigger,so we got rid of the ensuite and put a door between our bedroom and bathroom like a jack and Jill.After a while I felt it just didn't work so we closed up the wall and we now have one big bathroom.im glad we did it now. I too wondered if it would devalue the house and I'm sure if a larger family moved in it could be a bit of a problem,maybe someone from the real estate world will pop in and give you some advice. Comments (29)Hi Richard, My thoughts, (and I'm not an expert, so just a personal opinion), but I think the wetroom idea will be a total nightmare to keep clean. I would also be concerned that it not would be the safest option with young children in the house. Unless you are going to meticulously dry the floor down after every shower, anyone using the room afterwards, washing their hands at the sink for example would need to walk on a wet and possibly slippery floor. Also not ideal if you walk around the house in socks.... wet feet.. :-/ Even with really good drainage the floor would remain wet for some time after each shower. These concerns may only bother me though, these things are so subjective, but I always consider how much work will be involved in keeping a room clean and looking great....and the fact that the bath would get wet and no doubt splatted with shampoo and shower gel every time someone showered would have me in there constantly cleaning. This option is definitely also the more costly option as tanking would be required, and I you plan to sell in a year or so, I am not sure it would add value equivalent to your spend on the room. I bought a new sink and vanity from IKEA: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/washstands-taps/wash-stands/fullen-t%C3%A4lleviken-wash-basin-cabinet-white-spr-39891444/ However, it's occurred to me since that it'll take up too much of the room/floorspace, especially as the sink faces you as you walk in. I've been looking at other designs, and the wall-hung sink with a nicer-looking chrome waste could be a much better option. Added to this, if I'm tiling the floor, I'll probably need to buy a new loo, and IKEA doesn't do matching loos. Therefore...where can I buy a basic loo/basin package? What's the difference between a 'toilet and basin' and a 'cloakroom suite'? Should I go for one or two tap holes? Am I wasting my money? Comments (30)Hi guys, I am back again with a bathroom query, I have an image attached. I really don't like the current layout for this bathroom and I'm thinking if we move the toilet to the wall on the left under the sink and put the bathroom vanity where the toilet currently is so that this is the first thing the person sees when the door is open. Do you think this works? Again advice is hugely appreciated. PRO7 years agoWhat about having a step up into the shower and small soak tub area - rather than a wet room- have a recessed large shower tray - might be more practical to install too?!
7 years agoIf you move the toilet away from the soil pipe you have to consider where the waste is going to go. Do check that you can move it where you plan.
You might also check that the walls are supporting- take up a floorboard and look if the wall comes up from below and joists are fixed to that wall- alternatively you might find the wall sits on a beam or your floors in which case it is not supporting and easier to remove.
