Building a dry stream

Here is the pic of my front yard Getting conflicting advice as to what kind and size of stone to fill the bottom after putting in landscape fabric. This is a natural stream after it rains and the water really rushes. I have seen other drainage areas have their rock washed out and don't want this to happen.

PRO12 years agoWe have 2 'dry' creek beds - one that carries the water off the roof of the house and one on along the property line. Both are lined with large stones like yours and both have fabric under the stones to keep the weeds out. The dry creek along the property uses big stones combined with smaller, darker colored rocks in the middle - it's my favorite aesthetically, but the one that carries rainwater from the roof is the one least likely to be impacted by a large rush of water. Neither of our dry creeks have been impacted by rushing water and both are easy to 'clean' with the leaf blower! The size stones you're using now - and more smaller ones - ought to be just fine.

Comments (13)@ Gabby - you were told wrong as it is not okay! I have been building everything from houses to retail centres and the problem with damp/water penetrating the void is that it takes a very long time to dry out especially if a rockwool type insulation has been installed. What is more you can also end up with mould growing in the void. It was sloppy workmanship and for the sake of a few minutes work the builders have an issue to deal with that should never have been. The amount of water showing on the face of the blockwork gives you an idea of the scale of the issue so do not be kind to them about this as it could come back to bite you in the behind in the future. If I was managing your project I would insist that they use the water resistant plasterboard (green in colour) to line all of the walls. Comments (4)Yes definitely - a good ventilation system and a pulley system for hanging washing would work. Washing might not dry that well if the shower is in constant use, but if it's less frequently used and not used when there's stuff drying in there then it could work. You might find an extractor with a heat exchange would work well because this will help retain the heat but push the moisture laden air out. Good luck with your project. :)...See More- 12 years ago

- 11 years agoHi everyone, here's pic of our completed project. Tried without success finding a contractor to do the job as we wanted, so we just did it ourselves. We used 2 1/2 tons of small to medium cobble, and filled in with pond pebbles, which are a slightly different color, and look great. The job took us about 4 hrs, which we split into two days.
