Knocking down walls

We live in a 1930's Art Deco house, which has light bright rooms but doesn't really work for our modern family lifestyle. I would like to take down the walls between our kitchen and dining room and the dining room and living room, making one large open plan space. My husband is not so keen. I am trying to find links/pictures of similar projects to give him some inspiration and also wonder if this is actually possible to do without costing a small fortune . Can anybody help me please ?

Hi,
Are all the walls you want to knock down supporting walls? (Ie solid brick) or are they just partition walls? (Hollow sound when you knock on them).

We just had a single solid supporting wall knocked through our kitchen diner and it was a lot of work. You need building regs and we had to have a structural engineer even for a small wall as it was supporting a lot of rooms above it. All together - to remove one 7', it cost £1200 (that was cheap!). Your ceiling has to be supported so they would need to leave in posts (can be either side of the opening or in the middle as a feature).

An alternative is to have a partition door put in between the rooms so that you can open them up with bi fold doors to get the feeling of space when you want it but to keep it cosy when you don't.

We'd prefer an enclosed utility, probably adding a new door from from the dining area so that we no longer have to enter via the conservatory (whoever added the extension to this house didn't think it through properly!). On the plan the red outlines are the open plan kitchen/diner that would be created by knocking down the kitchen wall & moving the utility wall. We'd make a new entrance to the playroom so that no useable space in that room would be wasted. We did think about encorporating all of the utility into the open plan & slicing off the top of the playroom too but then we'd lose the area in the playroom where we have a sofa that is used by the kids a lot.

Hi Rhona, Your kitchen looks fantastic! A bright, bold colour choice in Canary Yellow would look great there. With our roller blinds if you redecorate later or just fancy a change you can swap the fabric of your blind by hooking off the old one and hooking on the new one without replacing the complete system. The only way to do it is as Arc suggested, so that you have a means of escape in a fire. Of course you will still need a fire door on the kitchen too. It’s whether knocking the wall down & relocating the front door is worth it financially? How much space will you gain in the kitchen? You definitely cannot just remove the hallway. If the kitchen was on fire, how would you get out? Building regs won’t pass that off. Must be a protected means of escape. Presuming your house has fire doors being 3 storey, they usually give 30 mins of protection. So if your kitchen was on fire for example, the door closed, you would be able to escape in the way Arc has suggested.
