Engineered wood floors in kitchen

Does anyone have experience and advice with regards to engineered wood floors in the kitchen. We like the look and it's an open plan kitchen with engineered wood in the remainder of the house, but we do not want a maintenance hassle. We are thinking of tiles as then there is no stress with regards to the floors being wet. Any thoughts or advice appreciated

I would go for amtico flooring. hard wearing, maintenance free, water resistant. ceramic tiles are cold, echo every sound and you have no chance if you accidently drop a plate or cup.

Hi there, here at element7 we have been fitting floors in kitchens for 15 years (in fact we do more kitchens than any other rooms) and have never had a failed floor, partly due to how well our floors are engineered and installed (we use our own installers) as well as the finishes. All of our floors can be wet cleaned and won’t stain (unless seriously abused). Regarding maintenance our oiled floors are typically re-oiled every 4-8 years (this takes approximately 2 hours and you can use them 2 hours later) and we have yet to refinish any of our lacquered or waxed floors (partly because unlike a lot of other suppliers we apply 8 coats of coloured lacquer (industry standard is 3 coats). Hello Charlie_bill, There are many and I would suggest Reeve but.. They don't sell to the public so you would need someone to procure it for you.. They do beautiful colours and at the very least you could look at their site which might be helpful to you in making a choice.. :))

I think this is a pretty good article as I hadn't considered inspection points before. I normally wouldn't hesitate to have engineered wood in a kitchen however having got a puppy last year and completely underestimating the amount of mud she brings in Everywhere I would opt for vinyl. We don't have wood in our kitchen but solid and engineered elsewhere and I would also consider how slippery the surface can be particularly for a puppy who runs and jumps everywhere. I like LVT but i think they vary hugely even within the same brand as to how realistic they are so would shop around. Personally I also think LVT looks better with the design strips between the plank to mimic wood and I'd also speak to the fitter to see how it's finished around the perimeter of the room. My mum has a nice karndean floor but finished with clear sealant which I really don't like! I assume it's possible to remove the skirting boards and hide the ends of the planks as you would with wood to avoid this though? I think LVT is also a bit better re scratch marks (if you wanted to keep the wood looking pristine) and although it can still fade in the sunlight I don't think it will be anything like wood can fade https://www.woodandbeyond.com/blog/can-you-have-wood-floors-in-kitchens/

Thank you Daisy. The brands I am looking at are more around £45 to £50 per sqm which comes in cheaper than Naturally Oak - trying to work out why they are cheaper when spec is similar.

Hi Lucy, An engineered wood flooring can be fitted before or after the kitchen is installed. The best thing to be fitted after the flooring has been put down is the skirting, this is because you need an expansion gap to your walls and the skirting will then cover this, so you don't end up with added beading. If the flooring is put down the kitchen can be fitted easily, though will need to be careful to put protection on the floor whilst moving the cabinets around. If the flooring is fitted after the kitchen then the flooring will need to be cut around some elements though mainly can be cut up to the adjustable legs and the plinths then fitted afterwards. Also the kitchen fitter will need to allow for the thickness of the floor to finish at the correct height. Hope that all helps Mark:))
