Jane we also developed this problem in our 80s built house, especially after a double extension which was brick built and the house being timber framed and then a ground floor bedroom built about 5 years ago which is well insulated and has good airflow; it seems to have affected our upstairs bedrooms more now. My husband fitted air vents in the windows which has given a slight improvement in the winter and then I make sure the heating is on in those rooms during the day winter time, but I have to turn them off at night. When the ground floor extension was built the Building Control of our local Authority, made the builders put covers all along the top of the new flat room which I think has cover the air bricks, we don't know what to do about this as if we take them off the rain/snow could well affect it even more. Hope you get a solution as I am still looking for one too.

You could remove the door, try and remove the pin, soak one half of the hinge in paint stripper and apply some to the other half still attached to the wall and wrap in cling film. Personally, I would chisel into the door frame and remove whatever material is covering up the other half of the hinge in order to remove the while thing. You can easily patch in some strip wood to tidy up any mess you made.

The house is actually a 150 yr old terraced victorian in London that the previous owner renovated by stripping out all of the original detail…this is pretty much the only room in the house that looks like this and Im wanting to restore a lot of its original character as the modern look doesnt suit the home. Yes the paint from the previous owner is definitely going. My question is more how to work with this wall without taking it down and having to rework spaces like stairwells above. was hoping there would be a simpler way to get back to a traditional look by adding bookshelves/boxing out, etc etc? .

Do you have heating in the bedroom at all? Do you dry washing in that room. I have mine on very low and turn it off at night. I’ve also had a new window installed last year and I get no condensation at all now.
