hi , I'm a a young aspiring architect, seeing as I'm about to begin my journey into the magical world architecture. I wanted to know how you all got to where you are today, and some tips if possible.

Hi JasArthur.

What level of qualification do you currently have? Quite a few in our Practice gained experience either via their Part 2 qualifications or through sandwich-degree placements. One of our recent members of staff came here for work experience two years ago and then returned post qualification.

You can check out jobs via Building Design or RIBA Jobs and there's never any harm sending out a CV and portfolio speculatively to Practices whose work you like.

It's very difficult to become an Architect - seven years training, exams and work placements, but a very rewarding career, but the programme of training is very comprehensive because it's a mix of experience and academic qualifications.

I think our team would say that the inspiration in the job is that each project is unique and a different design challenge to explore. Being an Architect is about being a professional problem-solver, with an encyclopedic knowledge of construction detail! So, my tips would be to develop good communication skills, attend lots of CPD opportunities and find a great mentor.

I use the blueprints to take the measurements from and then put them into my cad myself, even then i've never found enough measurements on the blueprint and use a scalerule and calculator to 'guesstimate' measurements to start with a design and then take my own physical measurements when building works is closer to completion.

For layout changes like the ones you described, I'd highly recommend hiring an architect. That's what I did for my home renos and it was worth every penny. A good architect can see the potential in a house the way no one else can. They'll have creative solutions, will steer you away from bad design decisions, will help keep changes within budget (to some degree), and will ensure the changes are to code. A structural engineer is useful too to plan how to implement the architect's designs for structural soundness. If you're removing walls, they're the ones who will tell you whether you need a steel beam or not and how to do it, for example.

Thank you all soo much for the feedback! I agree with regards to the many doors in the utility. The Architect proposed having a lean too to store the many pairs of running shoes my partner has, they get a bit smelly soo I don’t want them in the house at all. But I’m thinking we can put them in the garage which is what we do now and just skip the lean too. The dining area crittal doors can go as well. We currently have a gap and I wanted to keep it because the light flows through from the front to back of the house but I agree with Jonathan, we will have light in the back of the house from the skylight. I actually like the small bedroom, that’s our daughters room and we have family visiting all the time so I’d prefer to keep the small bedroom. Thank you all! This has given me confidence with regards to the plans!
