Starter molding is a flat piece of wood that is usually 3 or 6" high and you can mount other moldings to the face of. Like Sequins, I'd suggest you work with a professional. It's our job to come in, take measurements, and give you drawings of what you're looking for. You may find that with such high ceilings, your wall cabinets end up looking too heavy or the kitchen costing thousands more than you were expecting. You would also need to consider how you're going to reach them. One solution would be installing a rolling ladder. If you decide to leave the space open above, placing lighting above them is a great alternative.

Hello Ben, There are lots of alternatives to wood. How about granite, quartz or conglomerate marble? Conglomerate marble is more durable than standard marble, which is great for kitchens to reduce any possible staining or scratches. Granite and quartz are both very durable, non-porous materials and popular choices for kitchen worktops, too. Not to mention all three materials will last you a life time. I think that you need to leave a wider gap, 30cm is not wide and I think it will look like what it is, ie stopping the units so they don't get in the way of the french doors. I would go with a 60-80cm gap and make a useful feature out of it with floor to ceiling shelving. I've found a picture showing some shelving stepped back from regular depth units, so you get an idea. Another option is to use a rounded base unit if you like them and maybe put a stool or plant in the gap.

I would choose something very close to that deep red/rust/plum (can't quite work out what it is) in the granite. It looks as if that colour is also in the tea towel on the right (hanging on the handle in front of the oven). Everything else is so light I think the room would take it well and it would give it wow factor. You need a warm colour, as someone else has said, to tone with the cream of the cabinets and the granite.
