I have No pets, but 3 kids and I always go for a carpet with a speck in it now because it always looks good even when I've not hoovered. Here's my old hallway, had this carpet throughout in last 2 houses, In my new house I've picked same but little lighter because it makes life easier when I don't need to hoover lol.

Hi. Assuming all the floor boards in the house are good you should be able to patch it by sourcing reclaimed floorboards. However don't just fill the hole where the wall is, you will have to take up some of the existing boards so you can stagger them or it may look awful. However if you plan on using solid wood in a kitchen bear in mind the boards will expand and contract due to changes in the humidity. An engineered wood is much more suitable for a kitchen. In any cases any spillages should be mopped up immediately

Need to carpet living room, study, stairs, and five bedrooms. Want the same carpet everywhere. Everything I read says wool or 80/20 is best but all three carpet places I’ve visited have said polypropylene is the way to go. One doesn’t even sell wool anymore! I’m really confused. Wool is going to cost around £2k more, but I don’t mind paying if it’s definitely the better option. I want something that looks and feels great (will get 10-12mm underlay) and that will last for at least 5 years without looking completely flat and worn Thoughts??

Thanks all , I’m now keen to find an inexpensive hardwearing runner that compliments and will hide dirt from muddy paws! I don’t want anything contemporary or modern, I prefer classic English country / ethnic. Any ideas?, like I say it has to hide dirt, or should I ask the carpet people to do a runner in the chosen carpet but that might still show a lot of dirt... thanks
