I need help! I am about to replace all downstairs flooring. The look i like is glamorous/contemporary and love the designer Kelly Hoppen. I am running off white large square glossy porcelain tiles through kitchen and hallway. But need to choose a neutral carpet for living, dining room and stairs/landing that will complement the hallway tiling. I haven't bought carpet for years - does anyone have any advice/suggestions or alternative flooring suggestions. i would be really grateful as it will be an expensive mistake if i get it wrong!!

Hi. Assuming all the floor boards in the house are good you should be able to patch it by sourcing reclaimed floorboards. However don't just fill the hole where the wall is, you will have to take up some of the existing boards so you can stagger them or it may look awful. However if you plan on using solid wood in a kitchen bear in mind the boards will expand and contract due to changes in the humidity. An engineered wood is much more suitable for a kitchen. In any cases any spillages should be mopped up immediately

I would have a go at persuading him to give the wood a try, referencing all the opinions on here! A rug really adds a sense of coherence to a seating area, as well as warming your feet up and helping with sound insulation. Even if you went with the carpet option I would probably still recommend a central rug for your room to lighten/brighten and tie your colour scheme together. If I had to choose a carpet I would probably go for a natural wool colour which would be really neutral, look good with all the other elements, but then also use area rugs to lighten/brighten, centralise the furniture elements and balance the colour schemes in each room.
