Pam Gascoyne Hi Tom, As the focal point of the room is quite definitely the fireplace perhaps you should start with making something welcoming and eyecatching be it with candles, fake but really convincing burning gas coals in the grate or even good lighting it needs to really glow. The room is not really huge and perhaps keeping the walls light with, say, a warm very light grey with similar colour linen curtains or white venetian blinds would lighten the whole room and white bookshelves would be really excellent. A rug is essential but keep it cool too like the John Lewis multi stripe grey/neutral. A print or prints are a good idea and with the neutral scheme you could have anything you liked and pick out a pop of colour from the artwork and add to the cushions. The mirror is definitely too big and too gold. If you want to keep it hang it landscape and tone it right down dry brushing silver leaf over the gold but it’s a good place for a striking piece of artwork you like. Hello Jacky1h, I like the look of the red and the tiles and I would take the tiles all the way across.. Have chosen 3 from Little Greene that could look nice too.. I like the blind idea and you could also include the wall colours in a stripe or ticking for roman blinds, if you wanted to compliment the tiles as a different look to a bold red complimenting the walls.. : ))

It's really hard to judge colours when they are on the wall next to each other - unfortunately they refect off each other so that's probably not helping ya. Some paint companies provide large removable vinyl colour patches you can put on the wall and move around so you can see how the colour will look during different daylight. I painted a few square canvases and rotated them around the room, it really helped me choose. One colour looked great but as the light changed on 2 of the walls it looked like someone was sick on the walls - eek. So glad I didn't paint the whole room! Alternatively there are apps, like the Dulux one, where you can take a photo of your space and then change the wall colour in the app. Blues would be fabulous with those tiles, especially if you bring in natural wood elements. What are the wall colours adjacent to the bathroom? If the door is open, would your eye be viewing both the bathroom colour and (example) hallway? If so, you'll need to match the undertone. Good lighting, good framed mirror, and satin finish will bounce the light so that even a dark colour will feel lush and not depressing. If you were to take those tiles out of consideration, would the wall colour be an easier choice? If you are absolutely in love with the tiles and very much want them in both rooms, then its worth the hassle. Are you perhaps worried about 'wasting' money and therefore trying to force it? It is going to be much cheaper to get new tiles and paint exactly what you want now, than it will be for you to both compromise, end up hating it, and have to redo it. I take it that you love these curtains as you want to base your entire scheme around them. Firstly as mentioned in previous comments they are too short, you can extend them by adding a solid colour material in the brown or reds found in the curtains, to make them floor length. You could also add the material to the leading edge of the curtains, to make the extension look less as an afterthought. Add a blind either in the same colour as the wall or pick one from the curtains. You pull the blind down rather than pull the curtains, as the curtains would block the radiator. Chose a thermal blind if you are worried about cold from the window or a thinner blind that will let light through if privacy is the issue. When choosing a sofa go for a neutral colour. Choose a good quality sofa that you sit comfortably in. A sofa is expensive and usually has to last several redecorations and reinventions of a room. A neutral colour would go with many different schemes and you would use cushions to dress up the sofa and tie in with the theme/ colour of the room. I would go with a dark cream (or soft brown) sofa as the room generally has warm colours. Grey can be cold and would detract from the room. (If you have found the perfect grey sofa - change the curtains…) The blue cushions don’t go well. You could choose green cushions as they are on the opposite side of the colour wheel, which would be quite energetic as they are contrasting, make sure you get the right green - if it doesn’t work - return it. It could be easier to choose a lighter or darker versions of the colours you have, which makes it calmer. If you choose similar colours different textures will make it interesting. Finally I would paint the walls to match the beige in the curtains (including the radiator to make it “disappear”), which would tie in better. It could initially seem dark, but wait to make final judgment until the room has been completely painted. Paint and cushions are an inexpensive way to update a room especially if other furniture don’t make huge statements.
