HELP Fitting a plaster fire surround

We bought a 2nd hand large Louis style surround which has no fixings and the inside stands off the wall by a good inch plus. The far sides almost touch the wall (the chimney breast is obviously not level!) and we planned on fixing it using just a no nails glue on the sections that do touch the wall.

(Images show the top & bottom section of the left 'leg' with the 1.5" gap)

Will this be sufficient or do we really need to screw into the plaster?? Bit scared in case we bust it.

Also, is it normal for the inside on these to stand that much away from the wall??
