Thanks for the question! The ground is excavated out a few inches under the deck and the joists are set on compacted grade. The lighter colored 6x6 along the edge of the deck keeps dirt and debris from intruding on this space. Make sure to leave 1/8" or more between the deck boards so that rain can get through and moisture can escape from the soil, or the boards will warp.
