In our old house we ended up rewiring because there were 4 down lights and two pendants. It was completely overkill. My suggestion would be to choose one or the other.

smartie08 - Unfortunately thats not a choice, we've have it wired up like that specifically as the lighting isn't the best. At the other end of the kitchen from where the photo was taken, we have 10/12 downlights which light up the area perfectly.

The table light is more of a feature piece designed to add a bit of ambience, it's not supposed to be a fully functional light on its own

what size tv do you have? Do you know the measurements from the top of the tv to the ceiling? I'm not sure if it would work hanging low, I think it should hang probably anywhere between 26-34 inches over the top of the table which looks as if it may be in the middle of the screen

The height from the floor to the middle of the bracket is about 1.7m off the top of my head and the ceilings are 2.3m heigh. The TV will be anything from 33" to 42" so any low hanging light will impede the view.

Certainly not a fan of the first one. I quite like the idea of the second one, however I don't think it'll work with our existing lighting. I've laid out the downlights throughout the room in quite specific positions to cast light down units, doors etc to create shadows.

Adding something like the Starkey would cast "unfocussed" light which isn't the look we're going for, however this has given me an idea but cannot find one anywhere.

I'm thinking possibly having 2 pendants on either side, but stemming from a single rose and hooked like the Starkey.

It sounds as if you're only going to have 40cm drop max for the light? If so a flush or semi flush fitting may be better. This is from industville and comes in different finishes. Another alternative but you may not be keen is to go for a clear glass cluster pendant which would hang over the tv but obviously not completely obscure it. Do you plan on watching the tv more from the dining table or hob as you may be able to lower the bracket In order to get pendant lights

The trend right now for lighting is moving towards the vintage/industrial style. In case you want something more elegant, we would recommend the Lamour chandelier, that can be adjusted as a flush fitting as well so it would not come too low.

Or for a more vintage and industrial look we would suggest this 1800s Style Vintage Pendant that is also adjustable in height.

We solved this problem with a Phillips lamp. It has a very low profile, energy saving, etc. It's a great lamp, good light for a dining area, perfect for our low ceilings and doesn't impede the view through to the garden. Just did a quick browse to find the exact name (below) and found that Phillips have a number of low profile pendants to choose from.

Had a possible brainwave. Does anyone know if you can buy adjustable pullies? I'm thinking that if we have a pendant, we might be able to get a device which allows us to raise and lower it

There are the rise and fall pendants (Davey ones are nice). I assume you can just lower it but it may be worth ringing them to check as I've been on their website and can't see if it does or not

Maybe it's just the photo angle, but it doesn't look like you have much of a drop for a statement light due to the TV. Where is the TV being viewed from: sofa somewhere? Could you have statement light/s over the island? I love that look (either circular globe type lights I see on US blogs or traditional hanging lights) but am also currently toying with a Graham & Green chandelier! Rockett St George have some lovely lights.

Nothing too fancy, but I got a chrome fixture with fabric cable, and then a grey lampshade with a copper inside. It's worked quite nicely.
