What would you do with the oak panels in my dark hall?
Comments (51)We have the same type of panelling in our hall and it was oak the same as yours with an oak floor. It just started to feel quite dark and drab but we hesitated to to do anything for fear of messing it up. In the end we painted all the panelling in Farrows French grey, left the doors and floors wood and painted the sides of our staircase and the spindles in Farrows clunch but left the newel posts and the bannister rail as wood - looks like a different hallway - I have never regretted painting it...See Moreideas for dark hall
Comments (26)Thanks :) and that’s the sort of thing I’ve been considering. For example I could make the pattern of frames and mounts part of the display by having them uniform and choosing images that are almost monochrome. There are lots of sky or sea scapes or portraits to choose from that are almost monochrome. The other thought was to buy a large size print and cut down to use just a portion of it so it’s “disguised” and just being used for its light and dark contrasts. But there are so many images that are really amazing that I wonder if a should just pick one for each of the walls. ?? Will let the thoughts percolate for a while I think. And when I fo something will post back. At one point I was thinking of trying to make my own Japanese Enso symbol. Part of its significance is practise making the drawer of it better I believe. Sometimes they draw it with a big calligraphy brush and I saw on a tv program a Japanese artist using a brush that was as big as a mop!...See Moredark hallway & lighting ideas
Comments (29)Font of our house is north east facing and only gets the morning sun. Neighbours windows across the road does bounce back a bit of light but not a huge amount. It’s the dark front door and hideous artex (which may well contain asbestos) that contribute to the doom and gloom here. Project for another day;). I think lighting will be a key thing for you, something with a lot of faceted glass or crystals might help to distribute the light around more. I really like these holophane or prismatic glass pendants atm. Some are a bit pricey tho. Some inspo:...See MoreDark hall, awkward plugs, brown staircase.
Comments (5)A plant to the right as you come through the door would be nice, on the wall with the mirror a console table with a lamp and mirror above would bring it to life a bit. The position of the switches may be an issue but things can be moved. I have a reasonably sized hall and have put some quite strong artwork in which relates to the colour of a rug I bought on ebay. If you just had one colour that you could repeat it may help to bring it to life. Emma Mason prints in Eastborne sells original Twentieth Century lithographs etc, a bit of artwork always makes a difference. This is mine....See Morecreativeorg
