Dark hallway - desperate for ideas

I desperately need help with my hallway!

At the bottom we have a small space that is small and dark with almost no natural light but it feels like it needs colour. At the top there’s a landing which leads into the door to the kitchen which is painted part in White 06 and part in Power. The feature wall will be red earth which will lead nicely into the pink of Powderpuff.

The rest of stairwell with a “climbing wall” is going to be in Claybrook “Plaster Cast” which is a lovely soft off white with a warm bone undertone.

I am obsessed about Sarah Brown’s interiors which are very layered and harmonic and after an elegant but playful scheme.

I don’t really like green all that much but something tells me that it could work. Yesterday I tried some testers:

Little Greene “Hopper Head“ – too dark

Little Greene “Garden“ – the right mid tone but going all green terrifies me. Also, nothing seems to go with it except red which is a bit too wild for me.

F&B “Breakfast Room Green” – a bit too cool – but maybe because I don’t know what to pair it with

F&B “Calke Green” – a bit more subdued, again, don’t know what it’s goes with

Considering any other colour but it seems that with so little light in the flat anything with a cool undertone looks really washed out and cool.

I’d really love a sense of arrival – elegant but joyful and interesting.

We are also struggling with greens in a dark space. Best (for us) so far is little greene Pea Green.

Why so many different colour choices in one area? I would choose one cohesive colour top to bottom, then add art to fill the area. I love green and have it in my living room. A pale sage green would do the job such as Dulux Tranquil Dawn or F&B Mizzle or Cromarty. This is Tranquil Dawn which does differ in each photo due to different light levels.

Hi we specialise in period detailing and panelling and staircases particularly in oak. I will attempt to give you some suggestions from our point of view. //Panelling// My first thought is to keep all of the panelling but to add a bit more style to it which could easily be achieved by adding a simple mouding around the panel as shown below, you can easily source mouldings from a local hardware shop. You could also add a Dado moulding and run it along the top rail of the panelling that goes up the staircase this would make the panelling look really nice. I would then prime and paint all of the panelling in a light colour to give the entrance a lighter feel. create a coat rack area in the porch with a small bench for taking of shoes and it would look like a really inviting entrance hall! //Staircase// Again I think the staircase would look really good painted or stripped and whitewashed like a scandinavian style pine floor, this would lighten the whole area. I really like it when staircases are painted except the handrail however It would need to be stained and polished to look like a contrasting dark hardwood. If you were thinking of installing a new traditional style staircase there would be a cheaper option which would be to clad the strings and posts and replace the hand rail and turnings for oak versions. However I personally would be painting it or whitewashing it and adding mouldings here and there if you need to. good luck!! Wow, that hall is bigger than most of my rooms! LOL! I presume there is no possibility for a sun tunnel to add natural light in the hall? Any eaves above it anywhere? Another trick was to have panels above internal doors made in glass so that the light from the rooms would bounce back into the hallway. I'm always of the belief that if you don't have the light then don't fight it. ie even with light reflective white walls you may still feel it's dark and dingy so I would try and make it feel cosy and inviting by using richer colours perhaps on lower walls with some off white contrasts and add lots of mirrors where you can that will reflect back any light in the room. Also make sure the artificial lights are abundant and bright as something simple as upping a lightbulb wattage (or adding a multi-bulb sparkly chandelier) would make a huge difference

Font of our house is north east facing and only gets the morning sun. Neighbours windows across the road does bounce back a bit of light but not a huge amount. It’s the dark front door and hideous artex (which may well contain asbestos) that contribute to the doom and gloom here. Project for another day;). I think lighting will be a key thing for you, something with a lot of faceted glass or crystals might help to distribute the light around more. I really like these holophane or prismatic glass pendants atm. Some are a bit pricey tho. Some inspo:

When you enter the house are the stairs immediately in front of you? Where do the doors either side lead to? I have stairs directly in front of the front door (no hall) and a living room on the right. My staircase gets most of the light from the glazed front door and the glazed living room door. Changing to glazed doors can really help with lighting. Sorry, I haven’t made any suggestions for colour! I’d personally just paint it in a brilliant white first and then decide on a colour later on.

a great idea could be to decorate the hallway walls. i find it that decorating such things brings the whole place together while still keeping with the vibe. i would suggest one of the canvas found here: https://supfit-8788.myshopify.com as they do just that.
