Need help for my kitchen extension.
Comments (7)My 4.2 x 8m flat roof (fibre glass) extension with 3 rooflights and Alu bi-folds and side window & k rendered - plus electrics & plumbing/fitting of a downstairs bathroom & utility plus remodelling inside walls and replastering existing room and new room all came in at around £41k No floorings No heating panels if we want infra red vs using our old rads) No furniture ie no kitchen or bathroom Unpainted (prefer to do myself!) We are cutting down the utility to remove an external door cost, might skip the side kitchen window as will be light enough and taking out one roof light as two should be plenty as south facing. Could save by not having bifolds of course or going for white doors/windows instead of black/grey but some things I’m not willing to compromise on. Spent months looking at smaller options to reduce the size but came across more issues so stuck with the original. Firstly as suggested, a size would help and so would a floor plan as there might be ways of remodelling your internal layout so a smaller extension could work. I actually redesigned my friends house on an app and reconfigured their back room to extend out only by 2m but it gave them a much better space than they have already....See MoreWhat tips do you have for anyone trying to break into interior design?
Comments (5)Hi Emmeline, when we started Ensoul, we looked at the key challenges a home owner faces when looking to renovate their property which were primarily Space Planning, Interior Design, Architectural Design and Project Management/Procurement. We then built a company with a set of people with the relevant and deep skills to address these challenges. There is then the question you raised about "if you were starting out, how would you get these skills" and i think there are two points of view on this. Firstly, if you look at a parallel with the catering world, some of the world's best chefs are self taught, some have been trained by the best Chefs to learn their craft and some have combined both approaches with academic qualifications as well. So, there is no right answer, everyone's learning pathway will be different. However, there is one clear theme that i do see with every successful person i have had the pleasure to meet during my 30 years in business, and that is this, those people with a deep passion and an innate talent for something always rise to the top. I hope this helps, best regards, Mike Lander, Director, Ensoul (and a passionate project manager for over 25 years)...See Moretips on how to design kitchen cabinets.

Comments (1)Top 10 kitchen design tips: The kitchen’s function has changed in recent years. Once a space designed primarily with food preparation in mind, the modern kitchen has become the centrepiece of the family home. The evolution of this room means that it’s commonly the area of the home we spend most money on. So getting it right is crucial. 1) Talk to a designer or sketch out the units and layout including; depth of cabinets as well as worktop height. This is an important stage as it will influence location of supporting steel, windows and doors. 2) Visit showrooms, read reviews and think about what kitchen style you want- contemporary? Traditional?... Thinking about this in early stages will avoid taking rushed decisions and overpaying. 3) While designing the layout of the kitchen make sure that there will be enough space for people to pass comfortably (usually space of around 1-1.5m). 4) Do your homework! Search about different materials that your kitchen can be made from (e.g. Chipboard? MDF? Wood?). This will help to get the best value of money as you will know what to expect. 5) Think what cabinets you had in the past, what did you like and more importantly- dislike about them. Make sure that you tell this to your architect/designer. This is an important step as you will have to live years with the new kitchen. 6) Start thinking about your wall colours, ceiling colours and flooring. This will help to pick cabinet colours as well as worktop. 7) When it comes to cabinet finishes, think about the future. Spray paint finishes are more durable and easy to re-spray. Wood finished kitchen cabinets will discolour in direct sunlight and this should be considered at the design stage. 8). Leave lighting to the professionals. There are many ways to illuminate your space and even more ways to do it badly. 9) Start thinking about a splashback; glass? Tiles? Colour? Texture? 10) Relax and enjoy your kitchen.
