Friends you have been wonderful, thank you for your honest opinion. Maybe all I need to do is change the handles and re-wax the pine. I know once I paint it, I will not be able to go back. It is wonderful having such a supportive and active community. I will re-think the plan, maybe should paint the pine dresser and the chefs block and choose some new flooring . The tiles are handmade in Italy with the odd bumble bees and admiral butterflies. However could re-think the work surface and the floor too. Thank you colleagues you have been very helpful. Christine

Such a pity... your splashback is beautiful, but it looks out of place at the moment. There are a couple of things you could do: - cover the rest of the wall in a back-painted glass that matches the background colour (milky white?) of your splashback (similar to pic below) - you could have it on the left hand side wall (the one with microwave+oven) if you can give up the plugs there, re-sized, obviously; choose something else for the rest of the kitchen. - re-size and place it vertically in front of the hob. - use it somewhere else (bathroom?) and consider new splashback for kitchen. Hi, A glass splashback in a neutral (or bold colour if you wish) would look lovely and tie in with the contemporary look you are after. They are easy to maintain and there's no grout lines to worry about. You could opt for a light neutral such as stone, light grey or pale blue or a more bolder orange/ teal or yellow. Alternatively, using the same worktop design as a splashback is also very effective in maintaining a modern, sleek look.

Book matching is something that good fabricators do. It sounds like you need a good fabricator. Although - as I understand it only certain quartz with a high price tag can be book matched. And you have to do what you are suggesting where you use more than one slab and the wastage adds to the cost. The image is of Dekton not quartz which may be an easier way of getting the result you want.

Marble subway tiles from a local tile distributor were priced at over $3000 for
the kitchen, dining area, and laundry area adjacent to kitchen. The home owner found a nearly
identical tile in stock at Lowes for a total cost of $250. The more affordable tiles are not an exact
match to the island but coordinate perfectly and were a fraction of the
original cost.
