kitchen layout advice

see measurements, initial sketchup of layout and a kitchen I like the look of attached (more of these in my louisemc ideasbook).

feeling uninspired by initial design layout sketch. do you think we could fit more cupboards in along wall in front of door at bottom? i'd like an ironing board/brushes skinny cupboard somewhere too, and a bin cupboard/ space for bin.

ideas to liven up this kitchen/dining space (to be knocked through)?

May I ask, what's on the other side of the wall...?

If it's possible, I would definitely consider removing it. It would allow you to explore many different layouts and gain a lot more cupboard space (bin space and not forgetting that ironing board cupboard).

Thanks SA designs. sorry - just actually seeing your post now. on the other side of the wall is the living area, where a sofa would be.

The layout of your new kitchen will depend on a number of factors, not least where the waste water from your sink, dishwasher and any other appliance that uses water, enters the drainage system. Moving any of these is not normally a problem but you may be restricted as to where certain appliances need to be positioned in the kitchen because of where the drains are. The usual method of planning a kitchen is to design the layout making sure you keep the distance between the key elements to a minimum. Having the food preparation area close to the sink, cooker and fridge will ensure you don't wear yourself out, running from one side of the room to the other. Without seeing the size and current layout of your kitchen, it is impossible to make any further, useful, suggestions. Choose your kitchen fitting company vary carefully and don't be shy in asking lots of questions, if they are any good, they should answer all your questions in detail. Hope this helps.

Its never really good to have a toilet directly off a kitchen if it can be avoided. have you thought about this type of arrangement which gives you a pantry as well?

Hi there, it would be good to see the layout of the next floor - as the comment above says, you bathroom is probably above the kitchen so all pipes and waste is running through that wall. If you were able to, i would knock down the wall between the kitchen and dining room, and leave the location of the kitchen where it is, but make it bigger and possibly incorporate an island as well. Considering the size of house I feel the kitchen is a bit tight- you decide to wait until budget allows you to eat into the garage. If you are mindful to stick with this floor plan consider putting all tall units where you have the hob….. this has the advantage of giving the illusion that the space less long and therefore wider- I think it would be easier to use the space of the fridge was closer than on your plan. Separately I don’t think there is a problem with a hob on the peninsula- they are made from toughened glass and so I should worry less about the hob getting damaged than safety- consider if your children understand that boiling pots can scald. As long as you are happy you will be making the same choice as many as putting the hob on a peninsula is a popular choice

It's always a difficult one, kitchen planning. I see there is an area to the left of the second picture which has a very traditional layout, cupboard above and below with a worktop in the middle. As it is removed from the main area, could you do more with that? I might be inclined to change the other area too, you have a sink and and oven, all bog standard layout.............possibly think about dividing the two areas and swapping the cooking area to one side and having space to 'dish up' then the sink the other side? Do you use a microwave? Where would that go? How many people in the family and is a single oven enough?? You can't read any of the plan dimensions, so you need to re-post with a view of all the dimensions. tried blowing it up but it's just too blurred.

Hi, yes, help would still be much appreciated. No, its not a duplicate post, but just took a while before any comments. I'm now inclined to block off the door to the kitchen, have a washing machine and tumble drier there side by side with worktop space above, and storage above that, then a single fridge/freezer and broom cupboard beside.

I love your idea book photograph Louise....why not knock through to your living room just like the photograph? Also don't be put off by the images, they are usually quite uninspiring but in real life with your bits and pieces and your choice of colours it will feel much better :)

If you have a rightmove type floor plan that shows the rest of the floor this is on /and that above or below it (if part of the same home) it could give more of an insight as to alternatives that could be available, it might be an idea to post it to this thread if you don't mind ?
Plumbing needs to be taken into account when designing without knowing what else is near its a tricky one to help with .
Similarly without knowing more about the rest of the home it's not that easy to suggest which walls might be worth investigating knocking through as to knowledge of the knock on effect for other important things like fire safety needs consideration too !
We need to keep safety in mind as #1 priority !!

this is what I'm thinking for the layout now. hope you can make this out ok! i think it'd be best to block up the door into the kitchen to get more cupboard space, full height, along that wall. i've also dropped the broom cupboard as I think we could just use ubder the stairs for that. would be great if you could let me know what you think. thanks a mill!! louise

Totally agree with one plan, you need to be able to see where this room is in relation to the whole house. Also, without any dimensions it's impossible, are you able to post them? I quite like your drawn second plan, with the exception of maybe one or two tweaks, but need the info required first.

thanks. the dimensions were posted above. I've reposted here. unfortunately I dont have floorplans for the other rooms but here are some photos to show you whats there at present.

attached- measurements of kitchen/dining, hallway towards current kitchen door (with door into living dining area to be knocked through to kitchen, and door to separate livingroom), current living diningroom (to be knocked through from kitchen where arch is), current kitchen. hope this helps! thanks, louise

ps. there is no separate utility room and there's no groundfloor wc (though theres a bathroom on the first floor and a wc on the second floor). also, this is a photo of our current livingroom, and also a photo of a kitchen style we like, to give you an idea of the style and colours we're drawn to. hope that helps. any questions, let me know. really appreciate your help. thanks

sorry about that. i can still see them clearly when I zoom in. im afraid I don't have a clearer copy of them. the kitchen area width is 2390 and length 5260, if that helps. thanks. id hope to have some new plans with measurements drawn up in the next week or so. thanks

I think the only two questions we have unanswered are:- Do you need two doors into the kitchen- specifically the one on the side - is that the side of the house? You've got patio doors for entry, so can it go? And................can the dividing wall between kitchen and lounge area go?

thanks for your reply. the side door is to the driveway and i think is useful to keep e.g. bringing in shopping. ì think we've now decided to use the bottom wall for storage (larder, fridgefreezer and washer drier), though are trying to figure out if there's enough space to possibly put in a small wc through the door from the hallway, then build a stud wall, with the larder, fridge and washer on other side (thus moving the bottom wall forward a couple of feet and having a wc fitted in behind the door). thoughts on that welcome. plan to convert window behind dining table into patio doors. any thoughts on these plans? thanks a million
