kitchen layout advice

see measurements, initial sketchup of layout and a kitchen I like the look of attached (more of these in my louisemc ideasbook).
feeling uninspired by initial design layout sketch. do you think we could fit more cupboards in along wall in front of door at bottom? i'd like an ironing board/brushes skinny cupboard somewhere too, and a bin cupboard/ space for bin.
ideas to liven up this kitchen/dining space (to be knocked through)?

Comments (8)So the bit in the light blue circle looks like a cupboard, perhaps with a stacked wachine machine/tumble dryer in it? (good idea if so). But do you mean just past that cupboard, ie along the left hand wall as you come into the kitchen? If so then yes you absolutely could put the fridge there, it’s just going to be a bit bulky as will stick out further than normal units, and you may feel it’s in the way a lot as that’s your main way in and out of the kitchen. Also it wouldn‘t be able to go right in the corner, it would need a slim unit to the left of it so you can open it fully. So that would push it further towards the island and again that means it’s blocking the main walkway more. You could however push the island further towards the garden than shown in the plan, which would mean you have more space in that entrance area, and then it is more feasible to have the fridge along that left hand wall, as people can get past. Anyway, there are certainly options, it’s just worth planning the kitchen layout and checking it all works ergonomically before you commit to the window! As regards kitchen units under side return: you can have wall units or tall units under a side return, it depends how you make the roof. It’s true though that most people prefer to leave that wall clear of wall/tall units, usually that’s where a dining table or sofa goes. Here are some pictures of side returns with tall or wall units under. Comments (2)Considering the size of house I feel the kitchen is a bit tight- you decide to wait until budget allows you to eat into the garage. If you are mindful to stick with this floor plan consider putting all tall units where you have the hob….. this has the advantage of giving the illusion that the space less long and therefore wider- I think it would be easier to use the space of the fridge was closer than on your plan. Separately I don’t think there is a problem with a hob on the peninsula- they are made from toughened glass and so I should worry less about the hob getting damaged than safety- consider if your children understand that boiling pots can scald. Comments (3)Thanks for the feedback. We prefer having more natural light in the kitchen and being able to look out at the garden when washing up to keep an eye on our children. Currently everyone walks straight into the area where we cook and it’s very dark here so the preference was to move the cooking area to a space with more light and more space for preparing...See Morekitchen layout advice - flow of house

This would give you convenient access between the kitchen and lounge, helping the space feel open and connected. It’s ideal for quick movement between rooms, though you do lose some wall space in both areas. Option 2: Block the access between the kitchen and lounge. This would give you more wall space, which is great for extra storage or layout flexibility in each room. However, you’d have to go through the hall to reach the lounge, which could disrupt the flow slightly. If you value an open feel and easy access, keeping the door could work well. - 10 years agothis is what I'm thinking for the layout now. hope you can make this out ok! i think it'd be best to block up the door into the kitchen to get more cupboard space, full height, along that wall. i've also dropped the broom cupboard as I think we could just use ubder the stairs for that. would be great if you could let me know what you think. thanks a mill!! louise

attached- measurements of kitchen/dining, hallway towards current kitchen door (with door into living dining area to be knocked through to kitchen, and door to separate livingroom), current living diningroom (to be knocked through from kitchen where arch is), current kitchen. hope this helps! thanks, louise

- 10 years agops. there is no separate utility room and there's no groundfloor wc (though theres a bathroom on the first floor and a wc on the second floor). also, this is a photo of our current livingroom, and also a photo of a kitchen style we like, to give you an idea of the style and colours we're drawn to. hope that helps. any questions, let me know. really appreciate your help. thanks
