Colour help please

Hi, I have dark brown skirting boards and doors in my lounge, cream stone tiled flooring and a neutral beige/grayish sofa. What colour should I paint my coffee table and side board?

Hi Emily from your photo it looks like you're after a neutral colour scheme so I'd suggest tying in the paint colour with the existing colours rather than choosing a contrast colour. Farrow & Ball have a great selection of paint colours (including these newly released colours!) and have a finish suitable for interior wood:

colour: Worsted

colour: Drop cloth

I'd always suggest a tester pot to check colour in the room and sanding down the item first, then using a primer for the best results. PB

You could go for Farrow and Ball Pavillion Grey. Or, alternatively if the furniture is timber you could sand it back and apply a blonding oil to give it a limed effect. The natural timber would give a nice warmth in the room, but the blonding oil would take it down and give it a more subdued and contemporary twist.

Hi, I thought the lighter grey you were looking at was ‘wind spray’ not ‘surfmist’? I think it depends on what look you’re trying to achieve & how it fits with other buildings in the area. Personally, I prefer the lighter grey, I think it looks more modern & relaxed. The darker grey looks more formal somehow.

Greys tend to be purplish, greenish or blueish. The more yellow in a green grey the more it will clash with a blue grey (I know, I have it). The green room next door has a wooden floor, that makes a big difference. I would get the colour that matches the floor as you see them together. I'm not sure those green colours work with the floor, but it's difficult to see correctly on a monitor. Something like Elephants Breath may be worth trying and may work will with the room next door, green and violet greys seem to like each other.

Very nice room! I agree with Minnie and would go for a lighter rug. What do you think of these from La Redoute? I agree a warm neutral/green/duck egg/ even blush type tone would work wonders. I think grey is difficult to get right in north facing rooms unless you go for a strong warm undertone, by which time it’s arguably griege rather than grey! I also think that regardless of the room’s orientation, that cool grey doesn’t work with the warmer tones of carpet, sofa and fire surround. I’ve just used a copy of Little Greene’s ‘Joanna’ in my sort of dual aspect living room and it’s lovely- it can be beige, grey, or (in some lights) nearly but not quite pink.
