Where did I go wrong? Through lounge does not flow

Hi, I have been working on this for sometime and cannot get it right for. I'm looking for a modern contemporary feel that flows. I think the dining area is almost perfect however the living room doesn't look sharp! Is it the rug? Or dark cupboard, I just don't know. Please help!

Living room need better curtains, longer, hung higher and more panels, also need art over fireplace, need a chair to replace the two smaller ones and also decorative items for open shelving, ....I would light the built in cabinet inside and accessorize

Maybe a large basket on top of built in, you def need some more texture, try a throw baskets and some pillows for the sofa that go with the art in the dining room, maybe place some logs in a basket next to fireplace

Well, the chippies van was up the drive when I got home from work - a little unexpected. At first I thought that he was sleeping with the Mrs, but then I remembered that he needed to finish the skirting boards. He's done a cracking job - quite a few tricky internal/external corners, plus the corners not being exactly 90 degrees he was back and forth to his saw all the time. He really did a stirling job. It was 13 meters of skirting in total - which took him 4.5 hours in total (over 2 evenings) and it cost me £90. Considering I was origionally going to do it, it could well be the best £90 I've spent on this whole kitchen. I need to get a lick of paint inside the alcove that's pictured. Our little fishtank will be returning in there, but as it's out I may as well do it. When we get the bar stools, and dining room table & chairs I will update again. So: What would I change/add/remove ADD - Somewhere to hang the tea-towels. We have some on the inside of a cuboard, but they keep falling off. Maybe I need some slightly more expensive 'hangers'. The space where they could have gone we put a spice rack/draw thingie - that's probably better though. ADD - We forgot about the bin! Now we have our pedal-bin basically kicking around the kitchen. The Mrs has already filled the cupboards to maximum capacity so I'm having trouble getting an internal cupboard one past her. I think I may just fit one then deal with her later. The bin has gravitated to a semi-perminant place, but with the kids trying to be *cough* helpfull the wall is already beginning to get the odd splatter of 'stuff' where they just throw their food in the general direction of it. Last night I said 'Well, why don't we just put it in the utility room' - She shot that idea down instantly as she obviously isn't happy about the extra 4 steps that it would take to walk all-that-way into another room. Poor thing! Typical woman lol. ADD - At the start of the project I would have got the electricians to chase in another mains wire from the fusebox so that it comes out of the kitchen wall centrally to the back garden, then I would put a PIR Security Light in. I know that it's not a big job by any means, and I could, and probably will, do it myself over the coming weeks but if I could have had it without a wire on the outside of the house then that'd would have been perfect. Also, thinking about it, I would have actually got him to do it at the front of the house as well as he re-wired the whole downstairs with new fusebox etc.

The room is in good shape and it appears to be only cosmetic changes that are needed, so I would consider simplifying the whole design as follows: · Paint: You mention grey as one of your preferred colours, so I would try a sample of either Farrow or Ball’s Elephant’s Breath paint or Strong White to see what looks best sits best in the room. Both are contemporary favourites but will flatter the space and alter the atmosphere. Otherwise, aim for off-whites with a creamy, yellow tone to encourage warmth. · Furniture: Purchase furniture with legs to encourage the flow of light and space but if possible do not block the lovely elongated windows. Add a feature Chesterfield ottoman to centre the room and soften the new space. · Window treatment: Instead of curtains, I would actually use sheer voiles across the windows and have Roman blinds in place for the colder evenings to enhance the sumptuous, traditional feel. · Pieces: Add a large timeless mirror above the fireplace to bounce light around the room and maintain that area as the focal point. · Lighting: Work with illuminating the light through the room not only via a pendant light (consider a glass chandelier here) as this will only provide task lighting. You also want to aim for ambient lighting via glass base lamps in the corners and free standing tall lamps. · Soft furnishings: Apply hints of mustard and teal into the soft furnishings such as the cushions will complement the tones from the parquet flooring.

Thanks Jonathan. That's definitely one of the options for the long term as we are planning on extending into the loft to move guest or master there. We are thinking about extending to the side of the kitchen (to the left) and incorporate the back reception room so that the open plan kitchen/dining/lounge is L-shaped. And then we could have the existing dining/breakfast room as really nice laundry/mudroom/dogroom with the back door into there. Alternatively, keep the back reception as it is (formal dining or separate lounge for growing kids), keep the dining in the breakfast room and extend out to the right to make kitchen a little bit bigger (big enough for island between galley sides), big glass doors to garden, etc - but also add on space to the right to make separate laundry/mudroom/back entrance. Above that we'd put ensuite and walk-in closet onto current master. And this is why I don't know what to do with the current 'temporary' kitchen solution - in all likelihood it will be there fore 3-5 years, so don't want it to be just thrown up without thinking about it, but I also don't want to have to re-do work later, and I especially don't want to take down period features and ruin room proportions for a 'temporary' fix. And of course we need to know what we want to do before we can get the electrician round to re-wire the house, so it's not something I can consider for too much longer...

Do you need two bedrooms?...... you could make bedroom 2 into a super dressing room, with access from bedroom 1 you could fit it out with ceiling high units on either side this would give you loads of storage and would also remove the entry door. Also reduce the bathroom to a toilet only (always need two toilets) this would give you a bigger kitchen, then block the door into the lounge, this will also give you a better room for furniture placement in there. Good luck, it’s not easy to downsize, just done it myself and we have to remember it’s for out use for most of the time.....this means no bedroom for our Grandchildren, but the love sleeping on the sofas.

I would pull the rug forward so that the sofa is not half on and half off the wooden floor. Remove the 2 dining chairs and replace with an armchair . You need to draw in the space to define it as the sitting area. Definitely needs some art on the walls. A coffee table would help and I would think about putting the dark cupboard the other side and bring the open shelves to the dining side . You could decorate with some interesting books/objects . Also I would replace the curtains . Good luck.

I love how much light these rooms give, i agree with the other comments that windows need to be dressed, i think by adding a fabric which is mirrored in each room and adding more some more pieces of art this will pull the two rooms together best of luck :)

Yes the first thing that struck me as 'wrong' was the way the rug was partly under the sofa. Would look much better pulled out and if it's too big for to pull out I would think about getting a smaller rug, preferably the same width as the other and lined up in the same way,
