Roof lights

Builder wants to use plastic domed and I want flat glass. Anyone use plastic domed and look nice? Also can anyone recommend a reputable glass roof light company? Our budget is quite tight but I don't want to be constrained to plastic!!! Thank you

Hi Lisa,

Domed are generally cheaper - but they do have an extra benefit in that they can sometimes help reduce rain noise more than a flat roof light. Velux do a good selection of fairly cost effective models. That being said, I'm a big fan of a flat roof light, and they always look more contemporary and crisp. Try a firm such as Sunsquare who I have always found to be good value and very good quality - the prices start to increase if you are looking for bespoke sizes. I seem to recall that you can also have dual colour finish I.e. White internally and grey externally.

I think you are right to be pushing for a flat roof life. I'm a great believer in getting the structure and natural lighting correct, even if it absorbs a little more of your budget. Flat rooflights offer far crisper lines and in my mind a better quality of natural light. We have used both EOS and Glazing Vision before; with little to distinguish between the two. Generally flat rooflights come in a slate grey finish (RAL7015) exerteranally as standard, and the internal finish is white (if using upstand; otherwise the plasterboard is fitted up to window and obviously painted whatever colour you choose).

hello ok so we have another choice now: either:: 1.5 m x 2 m flat roof lights or 1 m x 2.5 m i wondered if nayone has any photos of how this would look / ideas on what we should consider? the room will be roughly 6 m wide and 4.5m long and the roof light windows will be lengthways in the room.

Spotlights looking upwards are definitely a good idea, it is important that the lighting does not dazzle the eyes. Concealed LED lighting is also a good option. When we got our rooflights we also got a piece of trim that neatens the edge. It was sold by the rooflight company, glazing vision.
