I'd suggest you make that island a bit smaller - leave a walk way gap then add another island in front of the fridge and pantry area - otherwise you have no where to plonk the shopping before you decant it into the fridge freezer and pantry !

Hope you are tall ? As that microwave looks a little high ? Shouldn't really be lifting hot things higher than shoulder height . As your arms loose strength after this point ( in most people )

I also think the island should stretch to the fridge. It may be this length to avoid joins but there are ways around that.
I also agree that the microwave is in the wrong position and would prefer it in the island, perhaps you could also fit in a warming drawer there too.
Personally I think the wall cabinets are crowding the extractor and a gap either side of the extractor (only 20cm) will improve the look.
I think the designer has tried to continue the island colour either side of the range but I would rather see this on the tall cabinets.
Lastly I think American style fridges ruin the cabinet feel of a traditional kitchen and ruin the sleek lines of a contemporary kitchen. Furthermore many kitchens are only available with 900 units to fit over a 910mm fridge (which may even need a wider space to allow the doors to open) meaning there will be a gap. Integrated larder fridges and larder freezers solve all these issues and will also give you more cold storage.

Is there enough room to have someone at the sink and someone else at the cooker? there are probably many reasons to have a sink in the island, but the dirty dishes gather around the sink, so I'd have it at the wall. Cooker in the island so you can chop, cook, display food, and watch TV, which I assume is in front of the sofa. People don't spend nearly as much time at sinks as they used to. I also agree, hide the fridge.

The hob should go on the island so you can entertain when you have guests and also see the tv while cooking. The sink should go instead of the hob. Nowadays it is much more economic to use a dishwasher than the sink.

The oven and microwave i would put them at eye level side by side. Beneath the microwave i would include a warmer so that it would have the same height as the oven. For the refrigerator i would go for a 90 cm fridge/freezer.

Wow! That looks great. The extension is similar to mine and seems like you are trying to shoehorn luxury items which you set your mind on before you decided on the kitchen. a couple of things to consider but make it suit your needs:

Fridge freezer, if you want an American one bring it closer to the working area.

Sinks in island is very Kurdistan / real housewives but what do you want to draw everyone's attention to on this facial point. (I kept mine empty, but can't convince other half to put cooker on it).

island could have overhang on the 2 ends, loose a little storage but gain seating?

what is the island made from? Consider sourcing out your own stone material like middle peak marble (Leicester) who are supplying me a 3000x1200 peice for less then half the price kitchen places offered 3000x900 and informed me that you can't go bigger. And the range is massive.

microwave is too high and also too small, go for larder unit.

move island to the right (birds eye view). How much value is that window offering with a bifold, that space could be used for more larder space/ microwave/ oven...

Look at independent stores or joiners who can offer more flexibility on a build, you are gonna be paying a lot for this kitchen, play with different ideas now because if you are in my shoes, I will not afford to make changes later, kitchen for life. They may be able to build taller units to reduce the gap to the ceiling... You may want to box in the space above the units to make it look like a recess unit.

consider bringing your fridge to the other end of your kitchen to make you kitchen triangle smaller. An integrated f/f is a cleaner finish and you could go 2 fridges top and 2 freezers bottom... But if you want America, get a plumbed in one.

I agree with the comments about the microwave we will move this under the island.

I'm undecided about the fridge/freezer I really want an american style but agree it would look more streamlined with integrated.

We feel like we're not making the most out of the space... at the moment it doesn't seem to leave much room for a sofa/living area.

Can anyone suggest any other layouts? The size of the room will be width 5.5metres (18ft) and length 7 metres (23ft)

Ah ok, so you have a proper sitting room next door. What are the requirements for sofas etc in the kitchen space then? Is it more just for an occasional seat whilst waiting in the kitchen area? Have you explored opening the sitting room up, so instead of double doors you have a nice open plan sitting/kitchen? I think then you wouldn't need the sofa space in the kitchen, leaving you much more room to get that working better.

We did think of that but would prefer it to be separate. We want to be able to live in it during the day and for it double up as a playroom as we have 2 children and another on the way. I'm thinking we may have to find another place for the TV and maybe put the sofa along the back wall or use the sofa as a divider from the dining room.

How about having the dining area at one end of the island Instead of having a breakfast bar. If you only had one eating area there would be more room for sofas
