As for the chair mix, I think four beige and two merlot would be lovely. I think you like a traditional look, so I'm a bit worried that you won't be happy with it. If the table will normally be smaller with four beige chairs around it and maybe put the two merlot ones on either side of the radiator cover/"console", then definitely do the mix. Mismatched chairs around a dining table are often all different or the same make and model in a multitude of colours or the same colour in different styles. Do a Houzz search and see if you can find your planned mix and if you like the look. If in doubt, get four beige and look at them for a while! You could tie the two chair colours together with little cushions on the chairs - maybe just on the two merlot ones. Agreed about the floors, they look lovely. In that case I would definately go for a pale grey curtain, or the room will look very white and the grey couches will stand out in a bad way I think. Or if you want to add a colour to the room, say blue for example, a pale blue curtain and then a rug with bits of darker or lighter blue on it would tie in a colour subtly. If you want to stick with the grey and white colours, I would go for a greyish or cream (darker than floor) rug with a pattern on it to make a focal point in the room. That info is all about the lounge. If you let me know the colour scheme and feel you want for the bedroom I can try and give some advice on that :)

Hi, Thank you so much for all the replies!! I've attached some photos. One is looking towards the garden, one is looking towards the study, a picture of the infamous mezzanine floor and the finally one a view from the dining room looking up into the livingroom (which is why I thought it would be nice not to block it). I don't know if the photos do it justice how empty the room feels when your sat on the settee - its like your squished into less than half of the room. We were initially definitely going to rip out the mezzanine floor (its an extension to the original design), but haven't made a decision. We are taking opinions at the moment. Everyone agrees it is a bit odd, but it does provide additional space (storage) and one of our friends suggested a reading snug. It's currently our cats little area. The house is a detached house built in the 70s. The garden is split level out back, the front is a slope. The garage is used as a gym and the kitchen is big enough to accommodate a dining table so we were going to keep the diningroom as the formal room (separate) and have an informal dining area in the kitchen. I'm in Manchester. Hopefully I've responded to everyone, going to post this and then review again!! Thank you again for your thoughts!! I like some of the ideas. Maybe a fireplace not on the wall, but in the middle. I'm thinking of replacing the radiator with a more modern smaller one, maybe a vertical one.

I'm definitely going to consider that! :-) Alessandra - thanks for all the great chair options! Unfortunately my husband won't consider anything in metal (he thinks it is uncomfortable), and he's not keen on the Wishbone (though I am!). My preference would be for the CH88, but I think it is just too impractical with young children.
