Need advice for awkward open-plan living/dining room
Comments (5)I would raise the curtain poles up and make more of the windows. I would suggest a round dining table, extendable as mentioned. I think as it is a new build you probably need to keep to modern with an eclectic twist. Changing the flooring doesn't need to be over expensive but would make the room feel bigger and would give you more flexibility. I would use warm neutrals on the walls and use colour in your soft furnishings, rug and accessories. A few fab pieces of art with colour would look great. As mentioned above you could easily change the point for the TV. Use good quality wood floating shelves and you can have a space at the back pre-cut on order for the wires to go down and hide wiring and access by a cable tidy in a neautral colour for the walls. This will take away furniture on the floor taking up space for the TV and digital box, Xbox etc. Making the room feel bigger and this TV was on special bracket so you can bring the TV out and re-position or tilt up and down. Picture from past project including floating shelves and cable tidy. These shelves are in walnut with oak stripes on the front but there are many different woods you could choose from....See Moredining chair advice
Comments (9)Great room - you might like to upholster your chairs in our upholstery fabric. We have many shades of grey plus some contrasting fabrics. You might like our Slade Stripe in Pebble Grey, Rock Grey or Dew. Alternatively you could contrast your greys with our smart Windmill Wood in Inky Sky on white. www.zoeglencross.com...See Morei need advice on dining room

Comments (4)Because the sofas are big heavy and dark I agree that you need to lighten up this room. I wouldn't have additional furniture because I think it looks full already but I might swap your little table lamp for a standard lamp to you have a light that is the same height as the TV. I also think your mirror is undersized, it should hang portrait to make the room seem taller - a round mirror would also work. I would get a white dining table. The mahogany trunk seems to obscure the view of the fireplace- perhaps a lower table should be better. I would also get an oversized houseplant. I don't mind the fireplace. I think you can put any colour on the walls and I don't think it has to be neutral but you should replace the curtains with much paler-perhaps even white. I think one of the reasons for replacing the curtains is the now slightly dated pattern. Perhaps put pattern in art or cushions so it can be changed more regularly. I like the rug but it does dictate your decorating choices- could it go in another room? If it can I think that your instinct is right that a large pale textured rug would be comfy and visually break up the dark tones of the sofas and floor. Lastly I would add a throw and a couple of cushions to make the sofas less imposing, add pattern and break up their darkness....See MoreSusanna Kalitowski
