Wide blinds

We are in the process of building two extensions, one of which will become my office, and the other a replacement kitchen extension.

Can anyone recommend suppliers of wide blinds. The glazed areas measure 3950mm wide with 2700mm drop, 2100mm wide with 2400mm drop and 2650mm with 2400mm drop.

Japanese panels look lovely and minimal, but when it comes down to light control and flexibility they are not great. The biggest drawback is that one section of window is permanent,y covered even when fully open. Shutters and Venetian Blinds can cover all of the window but be tilted to allow light in even when they are drawn together or fully pulled down. Shutters offer even more light flexibilty due to having split panels. The louvres on on the top panel can be open letting light through, whilst the bottom section can be closed and vice versa. I had Japanese panels in my dining room for several years but installed my own shutters just before last Christmas, it's made an incredable difference. Another problem with Japanese panels is that to come accross a three metre span the track required could be too deep to fit the reveal. I'm able to open mine fully during the day too, but with a desk beneath that may not be an option without moving items on the desk

Are you intending to close the blind at all, or do you want it more just for looks and to add a bit of colour / frame the window? If you don't think you will close the blind I would consider a faux roman blind. The advantage of this would be that you get the look of an open roman blind, without either the bulk or the expense of all the extra fabric. Obviously, you would need a join in the fabric, but given the right fabric, a good curtain maker should be able to make this almost invisible. Another option I have seen in Houzz photos is to have 2 or 3 separate roman blinds at the same wide window. Not my first choice but it doesn't look as bad as you might think (sorry, not really selling that one!!)

Hi Jen! Ah thank you. Well we haven't actually exchanged on our own sale yet (3 months!) and we gave up waiting so completed early on our purchase so we can get in and make it a bit more homely before we move in, ha ha. Fingers crossed for yours - it's awful at this time. No one wants to move just before Xmas Not thought about those temporary ones. We aren't living there for a few weeks luckily so thought if I get the sorted asap, I wouldn't need anything up. Worst case I will just get some cheap curtains and a pole if I have to, ha ha

You can get a wide enough kit. I’ve seen them up to 2.4 m wide, such as this one below. https://www.curtainsandblinds4homes.co.uk/Deluxe-Roman-Blinds-Kits-Cassette-1-1-Ratio-upto-6Kgs/Roman-blind-kit-cassette-240cms. I’ve recently finished one that’s 210 wide & it doesn’t sag in the middle at all so a bit wider should be ok. Just a pain to join the fabric for a wider blind. However, as the window is quite low, I wonder whether long curtains might provide a better finish. Agree that eyelet curtains wouldn’t create too much bulk & look nice stacked back at the side of the window. I found eyelet curtains much easier to make than Roman blinds!

There are possibilities on this but we are on the limit of size without the risk of the fabric "bagging" and sometimes split blinds can work better in panels which I can email you photos of our work to illustrate. If you can email me a photo of each of the 3 window panels I can look and see what is the best advice. Some times on larger pieces the fabric has to be quite sheer due to the range of suitable materials, and sometimes need a header bar to improve the finish,

Hiya,

What a lovely space this will be - with widths of nearly 4m, obviously your choices will be slightly limited, but there are still great options available to you. Vertical blinds can usually be made up to 4 or 5m wide, and with things such as solid louvres available, they can look very contemporary.

Alternatively, tracked shutters could be a great option. They look gorgeous and will really add a touch of class to the space.

If neither of those options tickle your fancy, you could always try multiple blinds. Are there any different panes that would lend themselves to multiple blind joins? It's difficult to tell.
