Hello Houzz community! We would like to select a floor for our kitchen that runs from the inside to outside patio. We have seen some lovely limestone tiles with tumbled edge but concerned about suitability (i.e. too porous, grabs anything etc). Would welcome any thoughts from the community. Many thanks!
Do you have bifold doors or similar where the outside and inside are at the same level?
I personally wouldn't use outdoor flooring inside, and I would make sure that any tiles you have are suitable for outside use.
Have you thought about laying a decking on the patio. Running the decking with the planks going away from the house will make it flow better and make both your kitchen and garden feel bigger
limestone can be used inside and out it just needs to be sealed first. Usually one coat before laying and another after. You could also look at porcelain, lots of suppliers offer it in 10mm thickness for inside and 20mm for outside, you just need to make sure the outside tiles are frost resistant . Are you having under floor heating too? Both work well with ufh.
Thank you! I'm not keen on wood. Yes we will have bi-folds and u/f heating inside. The limestone I've seen is less porous (I read on line!) but slight concern that although lovely (especially with tumbled edge) may live to regret. Porcelain def option albeit have done that twice before and was looking for something different. Choices, choices!
Limestone is fine for this but not all of them, the suppliers should list on their sites which are suitable. Mandarin stone or Ca Pietra are a good start, but Topps Tiles do some porcelain ones as well. Get them well sealed once laid and include the grout.
You could go for a very nice porcelain stone effect? There are some amazing ones out there with updated technology, visit a porcelain manufacture. You could install something like this if you can ?
Hi cvasili, flooring looks great when you run it through from the inside to the outside, it really helps open up the space and make it look larger.
Lots of limestones are suitable for this use, but as others have already mentioned, the tiles will need sealing. We recommend sealing once before and once after grouting so both your tiles and grout are protected. A penetrative sealer leaves the stone looking natural, rather than changing the colour or adding a sheen.
We've used our Dijon Tumbled Limestone outside of our showroom, along with our Tumbled Antiqued Ash Limestone and we love it! It works so well, and they both stand up to the (wet!) English weather. The tumbled edge gives a more worn, lived in feel and the natural tones and colour variation help to stop the tiles looking too overwhelming over such a large area.
