Need help with my kitchen floor disaster!

I laid a porcelain tile kitchen/ dining floor and unfortunately had to replace one tile after 6 months. We didn't have any left over as all spares were broken and could only lay our hands on one from a different batch. We thought it matched perfectly until it was grouted in but now it's obvious that it's different in shade and texture and it ruins the floor. It's a lesson learned, but any thoughts on whether anything can be done to salvage this short of ripping up and relaying a new floor? Thanks

Oh, I feel for you - when we do kitchens & bathrooms, we always make a point of ordering enough to leave enough spares for just such eventualities as batches are never the same.

Depending on where it is, can you use a rug or mat to disguise it? Or try and find another tile from yet a different batch - more hassle, I know, but if it is really offending your eye..

Thanks you. Unfortunately it's now a discontinued line, so it's the only batch the manufacturer has left!

The trouble with all these modern hard smooth surfaces and clean lines is you do get a great deal of reverberation and echoe whilst soft furnishing like curtains rugs and cushions will help to a degree the best thing you can do is get Acoustic panelling or padding you can get it in a form as a canvass and have your own picture photo or any digital print, so it wouldn't look out of place but would absorb the sound no one would ever know. Hi Kiera, It sounds like it is going to be an exciting project for you. I would suggest keeping the floor throughout the kitchen, hall and snug the same, maybe a light grey/ light brown wooden floor would look soft and help you create your country yet contemporary feel. I would suggest a warm but light colour on the walls as from your photos they look quite dark and you want to showcase that beautiful view that I can see through one of the windows. In your snug, I would suggest a lovely soft rug that would help it to feel nice a cosy and would soften the wooden floors and a gorgeous fire. You could change the colours of the existing doors to update them and coordinate them with your scheme and this would keep the cost down. You also do have enough room for an island if your kitchen is 3.5m wide. You could also some in built seating/ breakfast table with a chairs or a bench on the other side. If you want a more integrated country look, have your kitchen professionally spray painted in a pale grey or white after rehanging the wall units so that they are all level. Replace the light pelmet to something plainer. The worktop around the sink has gone quite dark from the constant presence of water. Consider having all the tops replaced with oak to coordinate with your floor. Wood knobs or pewter handles will complete the cabinetry. Remove the tiles and replace with patchwork tiles to give you more colour. Marble would still work well in all those areas - luxurious and dramatic! A couple of points to take care with: - Take care if you're option for high gloss, as they can be slippery when wet - If you're opting for a very "white" marble (Carrara or some such), be prepared for it to show every dirty mark and need regular cleaning. If your lifestye can cope with this great - if you have three labrodors and live in a pair of Hunter wellies, I'd urge caution....

Oh no! Typical - we generally say that as soon as the grout dries on tiles in our showroom , the manufacturer will have discontinued them!

As a last throw of the dice - why not see of the retailer would mind lending you a few tiles out of the batch - there can still be a fair amount of variation, even within batches depending on how they've been fired etc, so it may still be worth a shot.

Can you find out what the original batch number was. You may be able to find some from a different supplier that is the same or a closer batch than the one you currently have. The batch numbers often have two or three sets of numbers, one may relate to texture, another to shade and another to overall size.

You should decide which needs to match most. I am guessing shade and get the closest to that.

Are any of the tiles in corners or under cupboards? wondered if you could change the mismatch tile to an area that wasn't so visually obvious. I feel for you on this one.

Unfortunately not. We tried to do that first but the tiles don't come out in one piece.
