Stair runner

Hi

We had a stair runner fitted yesterday and opted for the waterfall style of fitting. Although I was aware that there would be a gap between the runner and stairs, i don't think the carpet looks right.... Should you be able to see the wooden gripper from the side of the hall? Thanks for any guidance! E

I am interested in this posting as our stair carpet is coming up for a change and I have started to looking at runners. I like you choice of runner. From the photos it looks like a very taught fit of the runner. Someone else would need to comment if this is correct or not.

I would have thought they should have used staples on the back edge rather than gripper rods. Does seem a little odd.

Normally the underlay should not be fitted on the riser at all and on the tread it should be taken in from the edge if the carpet about 3-5cm. The fitters should have known this. I think if you are not happy with the job there's not reason why you should have to live with it, the fitters should come back and do it right. It's not normal to see the underlay from the side.

We're going through the same as you as we are having to replace our very expensive sisal runners with their beautiful black taping after only 5.5 years. Would strongly recommend against sisal anywhere, but particularly on the stairs. Any dirt, spilt drinks, splashes of water result in stains that even professional carpet cleaners cant get out. The pile is too short and it all gets embedded in those lovely ridges. They shrink away from the skirting board quickly because they cant be pinned down like normal carpet so it quickly looks tatty and we're only 3 people including an unusually clean and tidy child. I would not be happy about that at all sorry. I don’t think you need to concern yourself with whether it’s the measurer’s fault or the fitter’s fault (unless you got an independent fitter?) your contract is with the carpet shop so I’d just be asking them to sort it. Gather as many pics as you can of what it should look like ie with the lines straight and the runner edges vertical on the risers. Shjuly’s second pic has a similar 90 degree turn in the stairs to yours so is a good example.

I have sisal flooring in my garden room. We previously had seagrass down. The first lot got wet. Nightmare. It marked. We only went for the similar flooring because the leak was sealed otherwise I would not have chanced it. I don’t think any of the natural flooring reacts well to wet or dirt.

I think that the style of stairs does not suit carpet runners because of the detail.the carpet shop should have told you this.
