Rug / Accessories help needed

Hi All, I'd appreciate some advice..What rug would you think could work in this space? Was thinking a large jute rug ? Or an off white large shaggy rug? I feel like we need to introduce some accent colour..what colour would you suggest? I haven't bought any artwork or accessories yet. I'm ordering voile curtains soon. Planning to get a buttoned back armchair, overmantle mirror with a vase in front, floor lamp. Depending where the sofa will be placed we'll get a console table too..any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Mira, Your room looks great :) I'd suggest either selecting a plain/semi-plain or self patterned rug to tie in with the existing lighter colours in the room. Something like:

If you do want to add an accent colour into the rug, I'd suggest sourcing your art work first as some bold colours there would work brilliantly against your wall colours and having the art work first would make sure the rug tied in. Personally I'd suggest a rug to tone in with the existing colours in your room, making sure it has a luxe look and feel to keep the luxurious, glamorous look to the room. Hope that helps! PB

Wow what dramatic room! I love how you have used the dark and
rich colours on your walls - it really makes your living room feel warm and
inviting.

Placing a rug within your living room will definitely be the
finishing touch to your scheme, adding a homely and cosy feel to the room. I’d
recommend designs which incorporate a combination of warm and cool neutrals

First of all, you aren't clueless :) I would follow your gut and turn the couch to face the fireplace, put the TV on the oak box near the window, the armchair and side table over near the built in dresser, and the red cabinet between the two windows where the armchair was. I like both your pieces of art on the other side of the room. If the red cabinet is between the two windows, you might want to switch the vertical piece with the one that is on the wall above the dining table - just see how it looks. Actually, I think the bird painting could look really good above the fireplace - it will add visual height (as jonathan suggested) and brings some red to that side of the room and it has bits of black and charcoal to tie in the fireplace and the couch...... If you have the TV to the left of the fireplace, I'd move the map (I like it for personal reasons :). Anyway, you really want a mirror up there.... it's a bit tricky because the fireplace is off set. Something this shape would be fab because most other items in there are really angular, but this one is too big and the price is crazy: Otherwise maybe a couple of small mirrors that you can also off set and put in a group, which would also add height: I'd do three or five of different sizes and shapes. I actually like the rug size and colour - it ties in with the blinds and the taupe in two pieces of your art and has good texture. Add a few more cushions to the couch and armchair in a couple of different fabrics. Maybe some of these:

Hi. It's quite difficult to see the pics but I think you already have wallpaper behind the bed? I would just paint the chimney breast in a grey with a brown undertone to go with the walls. If you want to display photos I would use the ŵall by the door as you come in. I personally prefer a symmetrical layout with pics of equal size but obviously you may prefer a gallery style ŵall! I do think you need some more furniture :( a dressing table or console table would look great in that alcove with an upholstered bedroom chair, choose a fabric with a pattern for the seat. Maybe a vase of faux flowers on the dressing table and a table lamp? Perhaps a mirror over the fire, something in a roundish shape with a warm metallic frame. The bed needs cushions and throws to soften it up. As the room is neutral what are your favourite colours? The wallpaper may also stand out more if you used plain linen. There doesn't look as if there's room for bedside tables but maybe add shelves or scones so you can bedside lamps?

Hi Loula, I would probably start with a geometric rug in grey and white. A shape mirroring that of the chair detailing. This will also still be crisp and contemporary like the rest of the space. Cushions in white will help tie the colours throughout the space rather than just having blocks of it. A large piece of art of work in the same colours on the wall behind the dining table would really work.. maybe a peaceful seascape to add a bit of tranquillity to an area for relaxing. Finish with a few accessories on the table and beside the TV to help bridge the gaps. Grey is a great contemporary colour that will work well with the scheme you have started. You now just need a few more layers to really bring it to life. At the end, as Liz suggested, you could add a single punch of a great colour to add a little warmth - my suggestions would be burnt orange or a deep rich purple. I much prefer your first layout. Is there anywhere else the second chair can go in your flat? I think an Orla Kiely wallpaper feature wall would suit the mid century/eclectic style of the room and also give you more colour options for cushions. You could pick out the pale pink and team with a navy for example. I'd go for some plain mid century dining chairs.
