Hi, I am with your husband on this one, the handles in my opinion should be the same height throughout. Aesthetically it would follow the line of sight, if you have centre of both doors your effectively breaking the line of sight and would look odd having it higher than the other.

I didn't use a Kohler sink, but yes it can be done. Mine has a marble counter and crystal handles. I'll try to find a photo but not at home.
