repainting the whole house . I have ordered silver grey sofa for my living room

Its an open living plan with dinning and kitchen at the end. I want to keep the house look neutral, I am looking at either Dulux or Crown paint in white, would you be able to advise what shade of white should I go for ? and what colour carpet I should use in dining.

also shall I paint the house in the same colour?

I was also thinking of white kitchen with ivory tiles and the same tiles in hallway.

your help will be highly appreciated.

Hi. How much light does the room get and which way does it face? Have you considered having the same flooring throughout the room to give a cohesive look and make it feel a little bigger? A luxury vinyl could work, something like karndean or amtico in a wood effect for some warmth and then add a rug in the living area. Painting the whole house in one colour can be a little dull unless lifted with art, furniture etc and a colour that will work for one room may not for another. You could perhaps consider other neutral colours or pick a neutral and use different shades of the same colour

The room has good light , I was going to have full carpet through out the living and dining . Kitchen is on the right side so that will have tiles . I'm really confused on the paint as there are different whites .

Hello Mandy, I've had a professional come and suggest a colur scheme for my lounge. The best advice she gave was to focus on how much natural light we got during the day, my lounge faces North, so only get sunght for a few hours per day. I am avoiding cooler shades of paint, initially had intended on teal or slightly lighter. I have settees in virtually the same colour as yours and we chose a Farrow & Ball paint in a colour called Peignoir (a sort of greyish-pink)and then chose accessories in various dark red shades. This makes the room look very warm and welcoming when the light is low. Hope this helps!

Lots of people recommend kitchen paint... other thing that I've seen recommended on here is decorators varnish over the top of the paint to make it easier to clean but I suspect if you're doing it from the outset special paint is the way forwards... I really like the Valspar range and one of them is scrubbable (can't remember which one) and you can get it any colour you want,.. which is mostly a blessing! lol

Hi @Nixxy H, Our advice would be to keep walls in rather soft/pale colours and to have a feature wall. Be carefull with colours though as those influence our moods and feelings. Check our website for little help on paint colours. There are plenty of great wallpapers for kids' rooms too, but you could have a magnetic or blackboard wall instead, or two in one. You could use the wall to stick his art onto, but also to draw with chalk. Be creative for a good start. Hope you find it helpful. Kind Regards, Paintforme

We moved into a house with a north facing bedroom and it’s taken me until this winter to realise how much I absolutely hated the grey on the walls. I’ve repainted it James white (very pale green) and changed the curtains and even in the gloom of January it’s a lovely bright space now. North facing dark rooms are ok if they’re snugs or tv rooms but if you ever want to feel awake and alive I think they need the lift of lighter hues... I agree with colourhappy- live in it for a bit and see. I get the need to minimise upheaval- I have 3 tiny kids, but it’s worth getting to know your space in all weathers first!

What to do with a dated 1930s SW facing lounge? Presently duck egg blue walls below the picture rail but would love some inspiration. Limited by current furnishings raspberry coloured three piece, cream floral rug and cream curtains. Thanks in anticipation.

Hi mayy76,

It sounds like you have a great decorating project to get stuck into.

A great white colour from Dulux is White Cotton, which I'd recommend in a matt
finish. It has slight blue undertones so it will work great with silver sofas.

I would also add the same colour through your woodwork if a touch up is needed, in a satinwood finish, for a seamless effect.

For your carpet I would opt for a pale grey colour, so it complements the white walls. Use the Kitchen+ range for your kitchen walls as it is greaseproof and really convenient to wipe off any stains. You can use the same colour as a base for the rest of your house, but how about adding touches of colour here and there?

Muted blue tones work perfectly with the whites and are really on trend at the moment, have a look at Wild Water 3.
